What exactly means "alas" and "kudos"?

So I am German, and always wondered what exactly alas and kudos means. At least for kudos I have an idea, because of context (like; giving kudos to someone for something), but I have no idea what "alas" could mean. Also automatic translation didn't really help. Also these words sound so un-english? Does anyone know, where they originated?

I hope someone can give me a good explanation.

Alas means like, how do i say this, show sadness or disappointment.

 

ex. Her butt was so fine today but alas I could not grab it.

So I would use it for example:

"Alas, this gas prices nowadays."

?

Kudos is recognition for something you have done. 

 

"hey you you climbed that mountain! kudos man!"

Please Quote so i know you have replied. | If we have provided a solution to your problem mark it with answer found.
