I'm on an Asus z87 Gryphon motherboard, and I have an i5 4670k cpu, currently at stock clocks.  And have been trying to follow @ProKoN 's overclocking tutorial.  But I dont want to do 4.4GHZ.  I want to do 4.2GHZ as I feel thats a bit easier to do, I'm not sure what voltage to set it to though, I've decided just to leave the cache ratio on auto because I'm not going to mess with that and I'm not sure what voltage to set it to.   In addition to that I have some questions.

 

1. If I overclock and it fails at 4.2GHZ will my cpu die or will I have to clear CMOS? 

 

2. If I update the BIOS and my overclock is reset, will it cause stability issues due to it suddenly resetting. 

 

3. What kind of voltage would you recommend for my chip for 4.2GHZ that isn't going to make my temps go through the roof, that wont damage my chip but is something pretty much all chips are guaranteed to succeed at 4.2GHZ on? 

 

Since this is my first overclock I just want to take it very lightly and over time I'm sure as I get more comfortable and used to it I'll start overclocking more custom.

Try 1.1v and go up by .05 until it is stable.

If you don't have time to do all the necessary testing and tweaking the voltage etc... just do 1.2v and it should be stable for sure (unless your get a bad chip)

1.2 also won't make your temps too high.

your cpu will not die

you don't need to update your bios because you're not running devils canyon

you will have to see what voltage works by going up in steps, try 1.2v and work up in 0.025v until it doesn;t bluescreen

4.4GHz overclock is pretty easy to do, I wouldn't defeat yourself so quickly:

 

 

First things to change in the Bios. Make sure you are on your newest bios before overclocking. 

1. Set "All Core" CPU Multiplier to 44X
2. Set CPU cache Multiplier also called the Ring bus multiplier to 35
3. Set Fixed CPU Vcore to 1.25 -1.30v
4. Set CPU Cache Voltage also could be called Ring Bus voltage to 1.20v -1.25vv
5. Set Vrin also called "CPU Input Voltage" To 1.9v - 2.1v

DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT mix up the "Cpu Voltage" and the "CPU Input Voltage". One is for the CPU and the other for the On Die VRM's. 

Save and reboot into windows. 
Use your favorite Stress tool. I used IBT on High and monitor temps with Realtemp or some other monitoring program.
Run it for 10 Runs or 20 or whoever you feel comfortable with. I run it for 10 usually. If it doesn't blue screen you after the 5th run you could assume you're stable. Again run it for as many times as you want. Get through 10 or 20 runs and no crash? Congratulations you're stable and you can fine tune.

Some extra's. Some bios' will add in a little offset voltage for both the CPU and Cache. Mine was .8 for the CPU and .4 for the Cache. If that happens put the lowest setting you can. Not "Auto" but .01 for each. My ASRock board did but i don't know if yours will.

Just overclocked!!! 4.2ghz 1.2volts. My hyper 212 evo is at about 65percent fan speed been running stress test for 10mins so far max temp is 68c. Could I let it get to 75c and it would be okay?

yes 75c would be okay, if your CPU proves to be stable at 4.2GHZ with 1.2V that's great...in the upcoming days try to lower the voltage in 0.05v increments until it's no longer stable, then back it up one notch.

OR you could try to aim for higher mutliplier at 1.2v and see how good of a chip you have...chances are you could get to 44 or 45 with 1.2v and still be stable...that's what i would do!

If you are on adaptative voltages make sure you stress test with intel extreme tuning utility that way your CPU won't get overvolted like it does with prime95 or aida64...

I'll wait until I get more confident with overclocking first. And yes I'm using Intel extreme tuning utility.

that's perfect...overclocking should be a slow process...i'd leave it at 1.2v and 4.2ghz for a couple days...use the computer normally, play games, run benchmarks, cinebench etc...and in a couple days you will confirm it's defenetly stable.

THEN if you wish you could start lowering the voltages to get better temps or increasing the clock speed some more to get more performance.

1. No. It will just crash and boot. If you don't go BIOS, mobo will ask to load optimized settings. You'd need over 1.4V or over 95C to something happen to chip itself.

2. No. Its just as you'd clear CMOS. Everything goes back to factory defaults. Not even mobo will remember what setting were supposed to be before that.

3. Max would be 1.3V. Over that isn't usually worth it due too high temps. As for temps, everything under 85C is good (under stress).

if its stable at that voltage then you might want to try increasing the clock speed upto 4.3ghz or decrease the voltage to lower the temps and be more efficient. if that doesn't work, you can always reset and come back to these settings as they are easy to remember.

Yeah, I'm happy how it is now.  If I ever do anything it would be trying to reduce the  voltage to something a little bit less. But my hyper 212 evo I dont want it struggling to keep the temps in a safe spot.

i would say 1.25v is about the max the hyper 212 can(should) dissipate.

At 1.20v i find my temps very very good (62 to 65c while gaming, 70c max under stress testing) and i run an i7 i think they get a bit hotter too..

at 1.30v those changes a lot (75c while gaming and 85c while stress testing wich i found to much..)

What I like to do is use the board's auto-overclocking feature and see what voltages it comes up with, then work my way down to the lowest stable setting. Shouldn't be more than about 1.25 V.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.
