How long do you wait before restarting?

How much space have you used on your HDD?

And if it has found a problem then it will try and repair it, so that could be why your see it 'Freezing' when in fact it is trying to fix to error in the file table and the corrupted data and re installed any data that was corrupted and couldn't be repaired.

Depending on how many files, junk files and other layered files you have it can take a long long time to check them all, especial if your HDD read speed is slow.

If you HDD is reading 1Mb/s-15Mb/s and checking at the same time its going to take a long time to read all your data.

Example speeds - Relate it to your HDD speeds, you can use CrystalMark to check your HDD speeds.

1GB takes 1 Minute at 17Mb/s

So if you used:

200GB = 200 minutes

But HDD are never always the same speed. Your HDD may be reading 50Mb/s and then it finds a lot of small files so it reads at 0.5Mb/s and then next its reading at 30Mb/s and then vibrations start effecting the speed and so forth.
