I currently have a fx-8120 and want to overclock a little to 4ghz stable under load with good temps... there are so many coolers out there though and I dont know which one to get. Keep in mind price to performance also is a factor for me, and on an unrelated note will this bottleneck a HIS iceq radeon 7870

Won't be a bottleneck

for the cooler, what is your budget?

I would say the best air cooler is the Noctua NH-D14, but I use the silverstone HE-01 and it's great too, but those are $80+ coolers.

- Silverstone TJ08B-E - Gigabyte Z87M-D3H - i7 4770k @ 4.0GHZ 1.2v - 16gb Kingston HyperX Black 1600 - Gigabyte GTX 770 OC 4GB -

- Silverstone Fortress FT02 - MSI Z77 Mpower - i5 3570k @ 4.0GHZ 1.09v - 8gb Mushkin Blackline 1600 - MSI GTX 670 PE -

- Lenovo T430 (1600x900) - i5 3210m - 8GB DDR3 1333 - nVidia NVS5400M - 256GB mSATA OS - 320GB HDD-

Then, probably go with the cooler master hyper 212 +, over your budget would be the Noctua ND-D14, which is probably the best air cooler on the market right now.

I was looking at the xigmatek dark knight 2 night hawk edition would it be better the the hyper 212

Potentially, yeah. With air coolers, the two things that matter are the size of the heatsink, and the fans pushing the air through it. It looks like the xigmatek could be better, but you could also get the hyper 212, and then some high static pressure fans, such as Noctua nf-f12 or the corsair sp quiet edition fans, and it would probably end up being slightly better than the xigmatek.

so would you suggest the xigmatek with stock fans or the hyper 212 evo with 2 COUGAR CF-V12HPBs in push pull

It depends on the look you're going for. Personally, I would choose the hyper 212 evo with the cougar fans for the best combination of silence and performance.

Sure! And presumably, you will have better temps, but push/pull config may only increase your temps by 5 degrees or so. Also, if you still have some room in the budget, I would suggest getting some Artic Silver 5 thermal paste. That will also decrease your temps by about 5 degrees. I am running a hyper 212 + stock with the arctic silver 5, and getting about 28 degrees idle, and 55-60 load.
