under 5k ?

macbook pro retina. if you don't like OSX put ubuntu on it.  But really OSX with Xcode and other IDEs/Text Editors provides a great programming enviornment.

I have a 2019 macbook pro with 64gb of ram and my gaming pc has been in the closet since 2018

I know you said not Dell but from personal experience: http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/precision-m6700/pd one of these. I use one for my professional work (i7, SSD & 32GB RAM), it's usually connected to 4 32" screens via docking station, I like it.

So are you looking for a dedicated GPU, or no? $5000 for a laptop will buy you just about anything you want. If you'd like to game on this laptop, a dedicated GPU would be helpful, but if you just want something for programming you could get away with not having one, or something fairly weak/inexpensive.

Any preference about screen size? Do you want something ultrathin? Any special features like a touchscreen, fingerprint reader, etc.?

something with a full keyboard. as i will be doing alot of typing

special things/company gimmicks dont really interest me.

i wouldn't mind a touch screen, but its not very important

Yes, if you're not a gamer, I'd recommend a MacBook Pro. It will handle occasional gaming easily. I have a 13" and I do actually game quite a lot on it when I have free time. It handles Assassins Creed Black Flag and other modern games quite well really considering how low-powered it is (28W TDP...).

EDIT: Considering your subject choice, I'm sure you will be able to easily install Windows or a linux distro on it depending on what you need.

An external optical drive is cheap and can be used the rare times you need one.
