Low end headset purchase advice

Go to solution Solved by Ren,

Modmic (2.3 $25~ if it's still sold, or 4.0 for $40?+) and Superlux HD681 EVO ($40 @ Amazon).

Literally the cheapest you can get while maintaining audio quality above that of most (maybe all?) headsets.

I'm looking for decent sound quality (primarily for games and some voice chat) and comfort. I'm not inclined to spend a lot of money. What would you guys recommend? If it's a gaming headset I'd like the mic to be particularly manoeuvrable because most of the headsets I've found leave the mic in my peripheral vision which is frustrating. I know a lot of people recommend headphones and a separate mic. I'm open to this though I have no idea about mic options and I'd prefer not to have something bulky. Is there a separate mic that attaches to headphones?

Thanks in advance!

What about the asus orion headset? the mic retracts in the headphones and it's a very comfortable and well built headset. If you get it make sure you don't buy the bundle with the external soud card though, it's not very good and it's quite a bit more expensive.

-edit-

added link to a review, bare in mind the version without the usb dongle is much cheaper

I've had the Steelseries Siberia V2 for a rather long time and havent regret the purchase. So i recommend them really strong, but i have some friends that really recommend the Creative Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Wrath Wireless ones and Turtlebeach x12's aswell.

Hope it helped :)

I didn't explain myself very well: I actually meant that I don't like when the mic's still in my peripheral vision while in use. My old headset (now broken) had a mic that was much closer to the side of my head and I could rotate it so it was to the left of my mouth instead of in front of it. I don't know why but I find having a little black lump in the corner of my vision terribly annoying.  :P

Modmic and as said above the Zalman clip on mic. You can use these with any headset. Also it kinda depends on your budget to recommend somethings around that price.

PS Welcome to the forum

Probably should've been more specific. I guess I'm aiming for below $100?

Thanks for all the recommendations so far everyone!

My recommendation is Superlux 668B and http://www.modmic.com/

The Zalman Clip On is pretty cheap and not as good as the modmic, those headphones and modmic will be in your budget

Yeah I'd go with the modmic because you can place it further back on the side of the headset and it also will rotate and bend so it won't sit in the corner of your eye. As for the headset I'm only recently getting more into the details of audio because of producing before I just made whatever sounded good in whatever I was using at the time so I don't feel I can give you the best advice on the audio part but from the reviews the Superlux 668B is looking good.

Oh then the orion is perfect: the mic is completely flexible and very slim, you can move it wherever you like, even under your mouth. I have one and it's invisible to me while gaming.

Odd question, but (if you've used them) does the leatherette get uncomfortable with extended use? Does it cause ear sweat is what I'm asking, I guess.

Yeah fo-leather will cause sweat, just kinda happens, but in your budget you can't afford to be picky.

When I got to that stage using leatherette type cups I used to put a hoody or dressing gown on with a hood put the hood up and put the headphones on top of the hood. call me crazy but it actually worked.
