Wireless Contraception

The Gates Foundation is apparently developing "smart capsules" that can release controllable doses of drugs into your body wirelessly. One of the proposed uses would be birth-control (although there are TONS of other uses for the technology).

 

While that sounds awesome and helpful, the main concern that springs to mind is the possibility of hacking these devices.

Another issue would be biocompatibility since one of the goals of the "smart capsule" would be to hang around in the patient's body for years at a time.

Personally I think wirelessly dosed drug distribution over an extended period of time is not a great idea. But on the other hand all the R&D that goes into this project will be awesome for the advancement of medicine in the long run.

- New biocompatibility research could help us discover better materials for prosthetics.

- Also, developing better remote control technologies that actually work well enough inside the body will lead to the development of more non-invasive probes.

Whoa whoaaaaaa This is certainly interesting. 

 

The investor in me is wondering if there's money in this.... 

 

EDIT: I feel like the hacking problem would be resolved if the reception ability of this "smart capsule" was incredibly low, this looks like it requires a daily dosage in order to work anyway. No dosage should render it useless.
