Radeon 7790 Crossfire

Go to solution Solved by Thebman712,

i would not risk it

(I wasn't quite sure what subforum this would fall under, so I tried this one.)

I've been wanting to upgrade my computer cheaply (hah) without having to upgrade my psu. Would an XFX 550w pro be able to handle two 7790's in crossfire? The specs of my computer are as follows:

FX-6350

Asus M5A97 le r2.0 (or something like that)

8gb corsair vengeance (1600)

xfx pro550w

Sapphire 7790 dual-x

1tb WD blue

250gb samsung hard drive that's really old

and some dvd drive.

Will I need to upgrade my psu for this build or would it just be better for me to sell my current card and get a better one? Or do nothing at all, that's a valid option because of my budget.

sell your GPU and upgrade to at least a 270/X and above

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

you can't sell that in US for more than maybe 50$

7790 CF would probably still slaughter a 270x.

So I have a don't risk it. Would the best thing I could do be just to buy something like a 270 or 270x and sell this card?

2 HD7790 have a power draw of 170 watts maybe more

a single 270X is like 180 watts

while the HD7790 CrossFire has more GPU power than a 270X

the issues you will face is heat generated by 2 GPUs and the newer games like WatchDogs do not support CrossFire and running single GPU mode on just one HD7790 is very weak

I just discovered an extra psu hiding in my basement. It's a 300w thing, could I use it as a dedicated psu for a new video card? I could jury-rig it to feed the cable into my computer. Would there be any issues using it as a dedicated PSU for a secondary card?

nope don't want to risk a PSU blow up in your face and fry your PC components
