performance boost from higher resoloution?

well yesterday I got a "new" monitor from my brother in law.

I had been using a viewsonic with 1440x900 res and my new hp res is 1680x 1050 and I am seeing a 10 to 15 fps boost in games like nfs most wanted (2012) and saints row 3

my gpu is HD6850 and cpu is amd phenom 9550 @2.6ghz 4gb ram

so my question is what is up with the fps boost?

That does not sound right, if anything you should be getting less fps

Have you set the resolution in the games to the max that the monitor can support because often when a different resolution is introduced the games settings are set to default

nothing has changed beside increasing the game resoloution. I have a file that holds all of my game settings that I load when I start a game. and also my pc is held back by the cpu in the games that I mentioned.

and the boost is only when there is not much action. my frame rate still drops to about the same when my cpu is struggling, maybe 5 fps better than before.

I agree it doesn't make sense that you would see an increase in fps by using a higher resolution. After googling the subject, there is a theory that as you increase graphical demands the load is switched from your CPU to your graphics card, removing the strain on your CPU and RAM. This may be the case for you as you mentioned your CPU is holding you back in games.

ok that seems kind of cool I will try maxing the game and see if I see any difference.

well I just ran saints row 3 at all of the presets and wrote down the min/max fps I saw watching the msi afterburner fps thing

preset min fps max fps

low ___ 28_____ 71

med. __ 26 ____ 70

high ___ 24 ____ 64

ultra ___ 10 ____ 55

playing in dx 11 max measurements were looking at an empty scene with no movement

min measurements were taken during a bad ass police chase with tanks and stuff while drifting.(I just noticed my frames get the lowest while driving)
