When do you guys think AMD will release new highend CPU architecture? We haven't really seen any thing since bulldosers where's Intel have an update every like 6 months.

AMD has been very slow in the last while. they have been focused more on the APU side than the higher end. i dont think there will be a FX cpu in the near future. ill probably come with a chipset and socket change down the road

I don't know, to be honest.

I hope AMD can release something that can actually compete with Intel's chips. If they can improve IPC and decrease TDP at a low cost, I would be enthused.

Yeah, Maybe next year they will say something can only be hopeful. I'm just waiting to see something new, to push the market forward from either side.

As far as I know they are ditching their old architecture. Dunno what was that specifically but it seems like they are doing research so that they can release "high-end" cpu by Q4 2015 or Q1 2016. I read that somewhere in the tech news area. I'll try to find the link. :)

I'm guessing 2016 with entirely new architecture with SMT like they said.

my 8320 has hardware SMT kindof....realthreads>SMT ftw.

with hsa thier high end is either fx8's or thier 7850 depending wht you want, amd noticed most games weren't benefiting from more cores (though they know 4 are needed) so made a quad core apu and then made the rest of the die a gpgpu to help with future compute tasks, kind of how a graphics card can help with render work in adobe/vegas. but it could be used for other things such as on-the-fly transcoding of raw captured gameplay footage.

if they drop die sjrink to 20nm we could likely see an apu with fx6300 sort of cpu and 7770 gpu in 1 chip

Your FX 8320 feature CMT, not SMT.

SMT is realthreads? What is a "fake" thread?

AMD cannot release a 6 core APU. They don't have enough diespace to play around with. It is the exact reason why AMDs APUs doesn't feature L3 cache, they don't have enough place. They don't have enough diespace to place another module.

That is the reason why there aren't 6 cores APUs.

I think that's the reason he stated 20nm. But to move from shared resources to single, add L3, and an extra 2 cores will probably stretch a bit over that. But AMD do have some talented engineers so we will see I guess.

But for OP; AMD are supposedly working on a new architecture now, they haven't really seen any improvement in IPC since 2007 when they started just taking K10 and clocking it higher :P

Then when that wouldn't work anymore they took their server architecture and overclocked that to give us FX.

AMD should come out with something within the next 2 years though, but I'm not expecting any 8 cores with limited die space (CMT designs are to fit integer core clusters into as little die space as possible) for 'server' operations like databases :P

Kinda sad, I woudld hope they make more FX processors. I'm right now kinda scared to buy AM 3+ socket mobo+processor because in the future i'd have buy new motherboard with processor all over again. But yeah i hope they will make processors which could compete against intels high end processors well.

we would all love them to do that but this implies a lot of money spent in research and developpment to be able to achieve that level of performance...they are currently making money from the hardware they have successfully implented in every single new modern mainstream consoles (PS4, XBONE and WII U) so it is very likely that a lot of these funds will be put toward RnD and in a somewhat distant future AMD should be able to pop up with a new line of CPU's that will compete and maybe even beat intel's offerings...but only god knows when this is going to happen...for now AMD is investing only in their APU developpment wich only features very medium CPU's paired with ''good enough'' graphics solution.
