HD 7870 vs HD 8970

nsyedhasan

I was planning a build in July/August and was wonder what would be better. A HD 7970 now or HD 7870 Ghz/XT and then upgrading to a HD 8970. It is going to mostly be for gaming.

Thanks in advance.

Or you could use onboard graphic for a bit and then buy the 8000 card when it comes out IF it release within 1-1½ month.

FYI, AMD will skip the 8000 series and release 9000 series around Dec or early next year.

I could do that as well when more information comes out. And I think it's good things come to those who wait.

The MSI Hawk of course. Such a beast card...

However it does ALWAYS come down to how good the die is. So you could gamble with a much cheaper 7870 and end up with a die that is top notch overclocking wise.

What about the Asus HD7870-DC2-2GD5-V2? It's about 50 CAD cheaper or is the HAWK worth it? And the HAWK is only about 20 CAD away from the Gigabyte 7950.

Save up and get a better card than a 7870 regardless, theres 7970, 770/780 will be coming out with 3gbs, if it was me id go 7970 or new nvidia. More useful than 7870 and too long to wait for amd 9xxx series : )

Intel I7 2600k @ 4.5ghz, Asetek 510 LC Xtremegear liquid cooling system, PALIT GTX 780 Super Jetstream OC, 8Gb Kingston Hyper X blu series 1600mhz, 64Gb Crucial M4 series SATA III Gaming MLC SSD, 1TB Western Digital HDD 6.0gb/s,  Asus P8z68-v Pro Motherboard, Corsair Vengance K90 Keyboard,950Watt Cyberpower PSU, Cyborg RAT 5 ,  Coolermaster CM 690II case, Dell Ultrasharp U2412M 1920 x 1200

If I was going Asus, I'd go for two of those triple slot 7950s.

youll have plenty of vram for a while, youll have a modern fast chip, it may cost you a little more but your building a haswell system, it should have a new gpu imo, : ) 7970 would still be good + the games. I just wouldnt get a 7870 for a nice build like that : )

I don't see a reason to buy a 7870. Get a 7950. I have one and it runs everything without any problems. Also since there is no official news of when 8/9xxx series cards are going to be released might as well get a great card now.
