This is not just for beats its also for boutique, style based mobile headphones as a whole. So please put some thought into your respnose . and don't just say "they're terrible" or "they're great".

My thought

to start I like neutral sound with clear and detailed sound with a very large soundstage, which is the exact opposite of beats by dre. So as you would expect I don't like the sound at all. IMHO I don't really like anything about them. Because they are not visually appealing to me nor do they have good sound to me. But to some they are worth it. Most people I see with them never have them plugged in which means they bought it for it to be a necklace. My biggest gripe with beats, are the owners, they will say they sound better than anything in the world but then they say that after coming from the $20 apple ear buds. Overall though I understand the whole boutique headphones thing I do fall for the looks of some headphones but I just never would buy them.

 My biggest gripe with [insert product here], are the owners, they will say they sound better than anything in the world but then they say that after coming from the [insert other product here]. Overall though I understand the whole boutique headphones thing I do fall for the looks of some headphones but I just never would buy them.

 

I'm only going to reply to this bit because anything can go into this instead of Beats. A few people in my family swear up and down over new things they buy and claim it's the best of it's kind, when I know in the back of my mind it's clearly not - "it" can be literally anything. Office supplies (including tablets and/or laptops) to kitchen appliances (toasters, ovens, etc).

 

It irritates me to no end when people claim this stuff just because they bought it - since they bought it, it must be the best.

Depends on the person using it , Hey if you try to sell a gaming PC to grandma it's not going to cut it, but to the right people it's Gold, it's kinda like those bands from outta nowhere , some like 1D & JB but Some(most) of them hate it for their own reasons , anyways they are promoted like everyone should like them, but it depends on the people that can relate to it. That's all there is to it.

like I said in my post I know I'm way late to the beats hate. But this thread is not about the beats its about boutique headphone. Even ones like the sennheiser momentum or Bose. Dont even acknowledge the beats just talk about what they represent.

I'd buy Beats headphones in a second over the damn ATH m50s that are always recommended. I've used both, and the Beats sound, feel and look infinitely better to me. 

 

Personally, I have no use for them. I use Apple Earbuds when studying around other people and when walking around campus. And Sennheiser HD558s when I'm alone and want a great listening experience.

Well the point of the beats for me would be a nice portable pair of closed headphones that I can feel comfortable with walking around UCONN with (a very large campus). The ATH M50s flare out on either side a lot and look ridiculous. And also just were not very comfortable in my experience. So the extra $150 would be worth it to me for what I thought sounded better, felt better and looked better. 

 

Of course this is assuming I could only choose between the m50s and beats. I'm a Sennheiser fan through and through and always have been, so I'd probably get Momentums over anything.

Lol I've never been worried about looking weird with headphones. Also my campus is larger I go to UW Madison

For better or worse the M50 is the (real) headphone I see most around my campus. Once saw a guy in 558s for some unfathomable reason.

According to the wikis on both pages your campus is only 936 acres. UCONN is 4400 acres. It's extremely long walks between classes (Some can be an hour depending on where you live on campus) and comfort is key. And I do care about the appearance of the headphones to an extent.

I was going by students enrolled. Madison has 12000 more students. Why do you have 4400 acres? lol

It used to be an Aggie School. The result is tons of open fields and farmland to walk through between classes. Just getting from my dorm building to the student Union in the center of campus takes a little more than a half hour.

Just don't pay attention to what people think of you, if you enjoy headphones that sound good, who cares if it looks like an upside donkey leg on your head?

They aren't perfect. But honestly they are comfortable and don't flare out on either side of your head which are two problems I have with m50s.

Technically speaking mine covers something like 50 square miles across two cities and three suburbs. But there are about seven different campuses? Campi? Campuss?
