So currently I am using a AMD Phenom ii 955 BE @ 3.2GHz ( Stock speeds ).

I was looking at the G3258 20-year anniv. Pentium and was wondering if it's a worthy upgrade.

By searching a while online my conclusion is that my Phenom is not any worse than the pentium. or is it?

So is it really worth upgrading ( or downgrading, I don't know what it is ) my Phenom to this Pentium? It would cost me like 200EU in total ( Mobo, CPU, aftermarket CPU cooling ).

Cheers,

My friend is swapping his A10 5800K (so similar performance to you) for a Pentium K, I think it will be worth it personally (as long as you overclock it). In Linus' recent video at 4.7GHz it hits close to the i7 in most benchmarks.

I don't think I could push it even far enough with an affordable CPU cooler ( 212 Evo, H60 ) on a Z97 board to even get better performance than my current CPU.

Depends on task. In heavily threaded things the Phenom @ 3.2 will probably be roughly equivalent to the Pentium K at 4.3.

Remember this is a 53W dual core, I imagine you can get this to its max OC on a 212 EVO.

depend on the work load, the pentium has 2 very fast cores and in games that require only a couple heavy threads (mmo's and indies for example) the pentium will do much better than the phenom and we are talking two times as good here...but then if you start kicking at it tasks and games that require 3 or 4 or more somewhat heavy threads(modern games) then chances are you will be disapointed...

Another benefit being if you wanted to go broadwell i5 or something later the Pentium-K is a good gateway to get on the best platform :P

I might get a 212 Evo ( Does it fit in a Fractal Design Arc Mini R2? ) and get it to 4Ghz or something and see how it runs.

The odds are if the case has a 120MM fan mount in the back it will fit the 212. Looking at the pictures of the case it will be fine I think.

Is this the Phenom to 4GHz? K10 still kicks ass @ 4ghz :)

There are reports of this Pentium being overclocked to 4.6Ghz.

Good reason to switch to this CPU would be beter single threaded performance + upgrade to later Intel CPU when they will come out.

Pentium really shines over Phenom in single threaded programms. But in multi threaded situations it is not so good as Phenom.

I would make the change, because I am a bit of geek on these, and Pentiums are really great CPUs.

Than I would much rather save up a few more months for a Z97 board and a 4690K :-)

Also having a 955, I would do this. Personally, I don't have a budget for upgrading so I'll be riding the Phenom wave for a few more years.
