Hi guys,

I have a couple of RAM/Memory questions to ask you that I hope any of you can help me with.

As most of you, I would imagine know, I have a build planned for this year and I've often have swapped things out and replaced that component with a different one trying to get the best possible build configuration.

My attention has recently turned to RAM and what I should go for. I've been trying to decide between 8GB and 16GB because the main purpose for this build will be video editing and so the obvious choice seemed to go with seemed to be 16GB since that's the usual recommended amount for a video editing PC.

So, now that I've decided on 16GB, I'm trying to decide between dual channel memory and quad channel memory. Since I won't be getting any more memory than 16GB (believe me, I don't need any more than 16GB) there won't the need to add any more memory later.

So what would you guys recommend, dual channel or quad channel memory?

Based on what you recommend, which brand should I go with?

Somebody did recommend that I go for this G.Skill 16GB quad channel memory kit (http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f317000cl9q16gbzh) as it's apparently what Linus uses.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

If you don't have X79, then you can't use quad channel. Linus has an Asus X79 WS board.

Dual and quad channel don't refer to the amount of ram in a kit. They refer to the way the motherboard is setup to work with ram. Since you said you won't ever want more than 16GB's get a 4 x 4GB 16GB dual channel kit. G Skill is awesome. 1600/1800 MHZ CL 9 is fine. Something like this for example http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl9q-16gbsr

@Geekazoid Does your Motherboard support Quad Channel? Is it LGA2011 or similar? If not, stick to Dual Channel ~ 2X8GB is the way to go.

Oh! Okay guys. Well thanks for that. The motherboard I'm planning to go with is in my sig, just have a good look :D.

I'm not sure I like the look of those. I want them to be black or white and close to a plain design. Not trying to be fussy, just letting you know what I'd prefer.

Your motherboard doesn't support quad channel RAM, so don't worry about that. If it's for video editing, you'll probably be wanting 16GB of RAM. An r9 290 would also be a better choice than a 770 for video editing.

If you want some more specific advice, let me know your budget and I'll see what I can do. :)

Your motherboard has a LGA1150 socket so you need dual channel for sure. Not sure how much you wanted to spend on ram but from a quick search with reputable brands I only found Corsair, Kingston and G Skill with ram that match your specs. This is all G Skill has to offer at those specs. http://www.gskill.com/en/finder?cat=31&series=0&prop_4=0&prop_1=1.50v&prop_14=DDR3&prop_2=16GB+%284GBx4%29&prop_6=Dual%2FQuad+Channel+Kit&prop_3=0&p=1

All the Corsair ram is above $200. Kingston ram comes at CL10 and you can def. have CL9 or lower at 1600/1866.

There is some G.Skill Trident X Ram that would be nice for what you are looking at. It runs at 1866mhz CL8, and it is a dual channel 16GB kit, so it would be compatible and run really fast. I reccomend this for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231623

If you want to populate all 4 slots (for asthetics) , you should get quad channel to ensure compatibility. It won't run in quad channel, but those dimms are certified to work with each other.

Other than that, I would say get a dual channel kit and populate only two slots.

Okay fair enough. Thanks for that mate!

Yep. I do know that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yeah, this is kind of a subjective thing because certain people like AMD GPUs and some prefer NVIDIA GPUs. For me it's NVIDIA GPUs. I know it's probably not the best choice but it's what I want. However thanks for this suggestion anyway. :D

If you want some more specific advice, let me know your budget and I'll see what I can do. :)

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. :D

I know that I really like the Corsair Denominator Platinum memory but they are a tad bit pricier. I guess I could just go with what I had before which was the Corsair Vengeance Pro memory, only in 16GB instead of 8GB. Aesthetically they are nice IMO. :D
