So I am about to buy the parts for my new gaming pc and I was wondering if I should go with the old x79 chipset or the new z97 chipset. The upcoming x99 chipset seems way overkill and I hear that some games do take advantage of the extra cores offered by the x79 chipset. However I don't full understand all the new upgrades to the z97 chipset so could someone help me out.

If just for gaming, go with Z97, X79 is more for people that also do intense video editing, Cad workloads, and graphic designing. no need to go with X79 if your main purpose is gaming.

X79 and X99 are in the same boat, if you think X99 is overkill then the same applies to X79, Sounds like you've answered it yourself, Z97 might be what you're after.
