R9 290 not getting the right results?

ShogunZ
Go to solution Solved by helping,

Your CPU is probably holding you back, but it's not really that big of a deal.

So my R9 290 tri-x (sapphire) is not getting the same fps as benchmark scores I see online. I'm talking about 8-10 frame difference on a Tomb Raider benchmark, and a score difference of about 400 on unigine valley. I checked if they were overclocked benchmarks and they were not. (Even though mine says OC on the box, not sure how big the difference is though) Don't tell me my CPU is holding it back. :(

Other specs:

CPU: amd fx-8350 4.0 GHz

Motherboard: Asus m5a99x R2.0

PSU: Corsair 1000RM

8 gigs of RAM

1tb hdd

CPU, but really 8fps is not something you should worry about...

Not worth a CPU upgrade until probably the next gen of i5s

as Helping said its probably your CPU, most if not all the reviewers use really high-end Rigs to benchmark GPU's so They will get better numbers.

tomb raider benchmark is worthless and not representative of gameplay anyway and 400 points? thats it?

EVERY benchmark you see for a cpu/gpu will have something like a 5% margin of error in my experience.

if you can get within 5% of a 3930k like every benchmarker uses id say you're doing well. just enjoy and game because theres no fix for this this is just the world we live in.

It would be the cpu since benchmarkers use extreme edition i7's to do their tests... don't worry about it. You're in the same boat as someone with an i5 and close to people who own an i7.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Man, I thought my 8350 was more than enough. I'm certainly not upgrading, I got this rig a few months back. I was fearing something was maybe wrong with my GPU when I noticed it. Thanks for the quick responses as usual guys!

Also @D3MON, I know it might not be representative of gameplay but it's still the exact same benchmark with different results, which was my worry. TB runs great, dat tressfx.

fair play, yeah some games might run like 3 fps better on an intel rig, but usually those rigs cost more which would of bought a more powerful card in the first place.

id still be tempted to bump that 8350 to 4.4 though I can't/won't say you'll notice the difference

I don't really have overclocking experience, but I've been thinking about it.

I'd recommend upgrading to a newer i5 within a year or two then.

Watch this if you want to overclock, what CPU cooler are you using?

I purchased a Hyper evo 212 because the stock cooler was garbage.

Good buy. With that though you'll probably only be able to achieve 4.2-4.4GHz on all cores.

I'll be trying soon, it seems safer than I initially thought. Thanks for the vid.

Oh yeah dude, it's honestly not that bad. If you want higher than that I'd recommend the Noctua D14 but if you have tall RAM, go for the Corsair H100i or if you don't have enough the H80i.
