We would have quite a few more threads if we made one each time somebody gave us bad advice

GPU boxes always over-rate their PSU requirements because they don't want to be held responsible for people who have cheap PSUs.

I think my R9 290 box recommends a 750 watt PSU. In reality my 550 watt Seasonic Gold PSU runs it fine and even has plenty of room for overclocking both my GPU and 3770K CPU.

Very true. XFX over-rates the requirements the worst, I've seen 850w on an R9 290X.
