Second Hand 780 vs New 770

Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

Well, if you trust the seller and you can trace him if his claims are not true, then you should get the 780 by all means, one year isn't much if it's been treated well. Just make sure you are able to get back to him if he scammed you. For a used product I would go no higher than 300£, only reach 320£ (MAX) if he really won't give it to you for 300 or less.

Hey guys,

so I have my eyes on a one year old GIGABYTE Geforce GTX 780 which is for sale.

Here is the sellers advert:

"You are looking at the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 780 loaded with 3GB GDDR5 RAM, this item is just over a year old orginally purchased at the end of May 2013. Though it's just over a year old, the graphics card is in excellent condition and works perfectly! It has not been overclocked or modified in any way and I am selling this item due to a recent upgrade. I am also bundling a digital copy of Watch Dogs which can be downloaded by using the bundled coupon. The item comes with all it's original accessories, a few of which are sealed, the documentation and the original packaging. I have not registered the card with GIGABYTE so feel free to register yourself and take advantage of the warranty period."

What I am wondering is whether a year old graphics card will really be any different to a new one, if what the seller says is true in the fact that it runs well. In that case also, how high should I let this bid up? I was thinking of going no higher than the price of a new 770 card, though perhaps higher will still be a "bargain"?

Amazon 780 = £370/$645

Amazon 770 = £240/$407

So what do you guys think? How high would you go and have you ever purchased/had problems with a second hand GPU?

Many thanks

There year old thing shouldn't really matter, they're designed to last much longer than that. I wouldn't pay over... £300/£320 for it, or you'll be getting close to the price of a new one. I'd go for the 780 if you can get it at around that price.

Thank you for the replies to this :)

I won the auction with a price of £290, which is about £100 cheaper than it is on Amazon and £40 more than a new 770.

Not a bad deal by my books and gives me money to get an extra SSD or perhaps a better processor for my build.
