Use nothing. Windows Defender is good enough for most situations. Just to be safe, get ESET NOD32 (I use it, it's excellent).

Hi guys, my copy of Norton Internet Security is expiring tomorrow. Should I renew my subscription or switch to something else?

I'd renew it. Norton doesn't deserve half of the hate it gets from people. The whole it's huge and slows down your PC argument is completely outdated. Norton heard the critique and significantly reduced the footprint of it's newer versions. I've had Norton Internet Security 2014 on my i3 laptop for two years and my laptop is as fast as the day I bought it. I do recommend adding Malwarebytes for malware protection tho.

I have used the free version of Avira internet security, it's basically just a system scanner. It's all you need, just don't be an idiot online and download dodgy stuff, scan once a week or so and you'll be fine.

Would I be fine with just Avast Free (no Malwarebytes or third party firewall)?

yes, Windows has a firewall built in and chances are you are behind a router as well, you don't have to have Malwarebytes (the free one) installed but most do to doubly make sure they are clean from time to time, but it isn't needed.

Even for university networks?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

How do you mean? if you are just taking your computer into uni to use their network, then everything would be fine with just Avast and Windows Firewall, Windows pops up a 'is this a home, work or public network' when you connect to a new network, choose home for home and public for anywhere that isn't, you can't go wrong, and you can change it if you pick the wrong one.
