Look at the top of the CPU. If it says anything but 2500k he sold him another CPU.

This.

If it actually is a 2500K, there might be an option in the BIOS to enable all of the cores, and they might be parked (maybe, not entirely sure on that).

How cheap is "pretty cheap"?

And if "pretty cheap" means that the product was priced significantly lower than similar -legitimate- products, did you no think to fully verify all the details before you bought it?

but anyway, if it is a legitimate 2500K, you should be able to enable the other cores in the BIOS, and you should be all set..

/Not sure how someone would spoof numbers in CPU-Z, but it probably is possible if someone really wanted to..

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

What motherboard do you have? If it doesn't have an 1155 socket you got ripped off hard.

The processor itself should say i5 2500k on the top. Make sure you reset your bios to default to make sure that you do not have any disabled features (although I doubt it). The i5 2500k is supposed to have four cores.

yeah if at least CPU-Z says its a 2500k just enable all cores.

Try loking in the bios for them,

I think he got ripped off there.

i will tell him to check bios, but if his cpu is single core i will laugh at him all day long :P

I'd be kind of skeptical about any 2500K less than $100 unless you actually knew the seller...

Maybe you could try out another board. It looks rather like a crappy board. You can also try to activate two cores to see if that's working. Tell us the model of the Mainboard first.

If it was me to avoid any settings in the BIOS being the cause I would removed the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS and re-insert

Open "MSCONFIG" and look for this.

nrprocessors.png

Maybe someone had changed it once.....

Make sure its set correctly because even if your bios is set correctly, this will still apply.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
