Yes, depends on your motherboard, plug it into a USB 2.0 port as they're pretty much always usable straight away (whereas 3.0 needs drivers) and there shouldn't be a reason why you can't treat it like any other drive. I've done it a few times.

Don't bother the only OS you can install to a USB or SD card is a linux distribution unless you want things to not work and give you a massive headache.

Actually, you can install w8 no problem, it's just a specific way to do it, i can't remember right now, search for it!

Codename: HighFlyer, specs:  CPU: i5 2500k cooled by a H70ish(2 rad)   Mobo: MSI MPower Z77   GPUs: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC 1150 MHZ core, 3150 memory both   RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16G @1600mhz   SSD: ADATA Premier Pro sx900 / HDD Seagate Barracuda 1TB/Samsung 1TB   Power supply: Corsair RM650 80+ Gold   Case Corsair Carbide 500R   5.4 ghz achieved on the good old 2500k, may it rest in peace. Current daily OC is 4.8 @1.41 v

You can't install windows onto a usb drive unfortunately :( Use linux for that, such a cool os!
