So my laptop is pretty out dated is running a i7 sandy bridge cpu and a gt540m which is fine for what i use it for but the thing that is really bugging me is the screen res its so terrible 1366x768 its so hard going from my desktop to this because of the screen so i was wondering if i could just get a new panel like 3200x1800 or something not going to be gaming and even if i do ill just be streaming from my desktop so is it possible and if so do know of any good places to get a replacement panel?

Definitely not possible. I can list reasons why if you really want...

Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad X220 - CPU: i5 2420m - RAM: 8gb - SSD: Samsung 830 - IPS screen Peripherals Monitor: Dell U2713HM - KB: Ducky shine w/PBT (MX Blue) - Mouse: Corsair M60

Audio Beyerdynamic DT990pro headphones - Audioengine D1 DAC/AMP - Swan D1080-IV speakers

It is possible.

  • 540M unlikely support resolutions over 1080p
  • Hardware display connector is likely incorrect for newer displays
  • The laptop's display mounts will likely be wrong
  • The laptop's display housing isn't designed to fit completely different display types
  • High PPI screens such as those of a 3200x1800 res are extremely hard to source

If you have some suggestions I'd love to hear them. I'd put a higher res display in my X220 if I could...

If not supported by the OEM because of LCD connector/pin out changes, you will have to get LCD pin converters, match the LVDS signals yourself(re-solder the motherboard side connectors). As someone has already said, going from 1366x768 to a 4k display may not be possible because of hardware limitations.

you have to be very lucky...

i tried it with my old notebook, i replaced the hd screen with a 1080 one that was meant for the higher end model of my notebook.

it would output a signal but there were white lines in the screen (probably due to refresh rates or something)

so look for a place where you can return the screen and hope for the best... or start saving for a new notebook, at least that's what i've done
