how important is the CPU with programmes like 3ds max

How much benefit does say a i7 4960k have over a 4770k? Or does the graphics card play more of a part in the render times for this programme?

If 3D max benefits from using multiple cores and threads , then yes you will see a big improvement over the 4770K. Also it's the 4960X not the 4960K just saying :) unless you meant the 4930K?

It is pretty much a CPU program.

It matters alot!

It does use GPU-assisted rendering, but it's not that great.

Not worth buying unless you are a professional making money from 3D modelling/ animation.

Oh,I forgot to ask a question : what renderer are you using?

Mental ray mainly

And yeah I meant the 4960x

Yeah, that's an Amazon error the, 4960K does not exist.

For the viewport modeling itself, that is GPU rendered, but its really light so thats not your concern. the metods in it and modifiers arent superheavy on the CPU either.

what you need to worry about is when you render. MentalRay/VRay (CPU renderers) are WAAAAAAAAY better and more stable than iRay (GPU based MentalRay) and there are some standalone GPU renderers, but unless you are going for fast over quality, a 6core intel is still very much a big improvement over a 4core and a GPU driven render

cool thankyou for the help im going to be studying game design for the next 3 years at university and i have a fairly large budget of £2000 might even be able to stretch further if needed so i was thinking maybe i would look into the 5960x when it comes out for them 8 cores render times on my i5 2500k so far have been really slow lol

hahah anytime. ive been in game design and digital arts for a few years now. and i know its a pain when i have stuff to render at my GFs place, on an i5 750 xD just so you know, render times reduce linearly with each core, and about 70% for each hyperthread you have. so your 6core would be a third faster in rendering than a 4770k clock for clock

don't bother with X chips , just get the 4930k or 5930k . they are basically the same chip

The 5960 will have 8cores though and the 5930 only 6

4930 is ivy... so less performance

if you have the 1000$ to spend on it, you are one of the rare people that will see the difference between it and a 6core

not the much but who want's to spend the extra god knows how much on getting an extreme chip that is haswell based, that is known for bad overclocking and more for power consumption saving.

yes but still the extra £400+ is really worth it for 2 extra pure core and 2 extra threads ?

also the overclocking capabilities wont be as good as 4930k since it is haswell..
