Do the non-reference R290 cards fix the problems it had with high temps and noise?

Hi guys, I'm planning on buying the R290 but have heard many problems with it running very hot and very loud, although all these reports seem to be with regards to the reference card. Now that there are non-reference cards available, are R290s running cooler and quieter such that they can be compared to the GTX 780 in terms of noise and temperature? If so, which brand would you recommend? And is it still worth getting the R290 over the GTX 780 in your opinion? I'm am planning on using it with a i7 - 4770k if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Yer pretty much :) the coolers are a tonne better

gtx 780 if you only using a single panel, r9 290 for dual panel set up, but in all honesty just get whatever's cheaper, also get msi or sapphire if you're getting the amd.

well it depends on your use i guess, a 780 will be better if you use adobe or any cuda programs but the 290 is cheaper

Yup, just don't get a Asus 290(x), they just slapped a 780 cooler that doesn't even have half the heat pipes touching the GPU.

Yes, R9 290s like the Sapphire Vapor-X, are very cool and quiet. The bad temps and noise come from the Stock cooler.

XFX, Powercolor, Sapphire, Gigabyte, MSI, are all very good.
