windows 8.1 because it will probably supported longer than 7 and because it is always better to be up to date

Double Glazing? jk get Windows 8.1 with startisback :)

I installed "Classic Shell" Its free and in my eyes, makes Windows 8 look like Windows 7 as I used my Windows 7 Licence on another machine so I was annoyed that I had to install my copy of Windows 8 Pro on my machine but once I installed Classic Shell, it's practically like using Windows 7.

Main Machine:  16 inch MacBook Pro (2021), Apple M1 Pro (10 CPU, 16 GPU Core), 512GB SDD, 16GB RAM

startisback is much better its integrated into the system not an add-on like most and is very stable.

8.1, but no need for silly startisback/classic shell BS. Start is Start. When you press Win key on your Windows 7, what happens? Start menu opens, right? What happens when you press Win key on your Windows 8? Start menu opens... only in full screen, same shit, different appearance, get with the damn times.

Let's face it, Windows 7 is Vista SP3, Windows 7 SP1 is Vista SP4, Windows 8 is Vista SP5, Windows 8.1 is Vista SP6 and Windows 8.1 Update 1 is Vista SP7.

And Vista was fine, especially after SP2, it became really stable... didn't stop me from upgrading to Windows 7 when it came out, but still, it's not as bad as people seem to think/remember.

At least it's not Windows XP, which was fine at the time, but 10+ years on it's just past it's prime and people need to get off the nostalgia trip about it.

They did the worst possible job with driver support on release, and the UAC was unneccessary visible, but nowadays, Vista works fine. :D

Ontopic: yes, windows 8.1. The sooner you get used to it the better.

The funny thing about the windows 8 / 8.1 start button is that it's the first time Microsoft has made a true start button, before, for most of the people using a windows computer it was used to switch off the computer.  I remember the out cry when the start button made its appearance with windows 95, there was more media shouting negative about the start button then it did with Windows 8.

Microsoft added more functions over the years for the start button but now they try something different, it did not work for desktop PC's but Microsoft is slow but it gets there , its just normal windows evolution, look what happened with Windows Vista, it was evolved to windows 7.

Anyway, just get Windows 8.1 for gaming as you said you will be using a rotten fruit for productivity stuff.

Cry Havoc!

Personally I always skip a generation and fortunately I've been lucky.  From 3.1 to 98 to XP to Win7.   I've used Win8 and I just don't like it, the changes to the start button for me was too much.  I don't like having to go to a search bar to find a program and the "tiles" and that whole format is geared to touchscreens which I don't have an have any intention of getting.

They moved a little quick with Win8 in my opinion.  You don't remove a standard like the start button, which has been in since Win 3.1 all at once. It should have been an option not a requirement, and yes they brought back the "button" but not the same functionality which to me was just a middle finger to those who demanded the start button return.

Windows 9 should come out with 2 editions, one for tablets and touchscreens with tiles and one with the same backbone but with a "classic" functionality.  I'd pay more for the classic as well, so they should take that thinking into account for their bottom line.  More choice, not less.  Otherwise they may open a path by which Linux works to swipe some gaming from them.   SteamOS is small now, but if they make a misstep with the next WIn9 release, it might open the market up for alternatives more than just the hobbyist market.

I'd love to use a linux build, right now the only thing Windows has going for it is it's compatibility with games, if gaming sees Linux and SteamOS markets grow windows might not be the big boy on the block in 5 years.  And it will be nobody's fault but their own by limiting choice.
