Even though I own two 770's, I'd trade them for a couple 290's any day. Like @Sonefiler said, way better performance and more VRAM. And, get a 290 with an aftermarket cooler, and you can easily OC it to the performance of a 290x, maybe a tad more if you're lucky.

I vote the r9 290 tri x, it's one of the best coolers, but doesn't carry a premium, and the 290 is better than the gtx 770

MSI AB. I would recommend using PowerColor's program for more reliability though, I did it when it didn't exist yet.
