I am looking at Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3600MHz C16 for around €200/$200 which is less than half the money I need to spend for a decent speed 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 kit and I wonder if it still makes sense to build a new system with this or similar kits? I can still find some new components for AM4/LGA1700, but they seem to disappear quickly (and prices at least for Intel CPUs keep increasing).

If you are trying to save money, sure it makes sense going with DDR4.

People will disagree and try to up sell DDR5. Really, it depends on the deal and other circumstances.

This is going to depend on what you're building the PC for and how long you want it to last.

There's no point buying into DDR4, if that system is not going to suffice longer-term. E.g. if you're spending $2000 overall, the RAM cost is not something I'd make this decision on.

If you are updating an existing system, sure.

If building a new system, it may be worth the extra $$ to go with a DDR5 platform.

Also depends on if you want to overclock/chipset.

for example LGA1700 DDR4 boards with the Z790 chipset are harder to find and not cheap any more.

A comparable DDR5 with the Z790 chipset board is much less expensive, by $100 or more.

Why wouldn't a system with DDR4 is not going to suffice longer-term? And if spending $200 for RAM, obviously I would not spend $2000 overall.

I am building a new system and I am not overclocking. B760/B660 motherboards are still available for less than €150/$150.

That isn't obvious, plenty of systems before the RAMpocolypse spent ~$100 on RAM and yet the entire system was $2500. Plus even if it should be "obvious," there's enough dumb decisions made on here that you really can't assume anything like that.

It will be slower and be less able to be upgraded. If you're one of those people who does the Ship of Thesius style upgrading, biting the bullet and going DDR5 now would probably make more sense, though if you build a system once every ~5 years and sell your old one/move it to server duty, going DDR4 now isn't really going to be much of a downside.

I'm aware. I upgraded my system in Dec. and went with a B760 board specifically because I already had the DDR4 ram and that saved enough to pay for the cooler and then some.

I would have preferred to go with a Z790 board, but the RAM prices were starting to climb and DDR4/Z790 boards were becoming scarce.

For a short while Newegg dropped all the DDR4 boards until Ram prices went really nuts and people started hanging onto their DDR4 ram, but still wanted to upgrade anyway, like me.

With the current insane prices on RAM I would pick DDR4, if you can get it for half the price as you say.

There are more important things in life that you can use money on, so don't pick DDR5 now.

What DDR4 did you have and what was the upgrade?

Would a Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3600MHz C16 kit be a good choice?

it was some 16 gb of Corsair Vengeance 3000. The upgrade was from an I5-6600K/MSI Z170 board to an I5-12600KF, Gigabyte B760M Gaming PLUS WIFI DDR4, and a Thermalright Spirit 120 cooler. got them during Newegg's X-Mas sales, cpu, $120, mobo, $99.

I've since been lucky enough to find a G-Skill Ripjaws 32gb kit of DDR4 3600 on e-bay for $130 a couple of months ago and didn't get ripped off!

What about graphics? If you paid only $130 a couple of months ago, then even $200 seems too much.

you asked what the upgrade was, didn't upgrade gpu. It's an Asus DUAL 2060 OC 6gb.

Ram prices have increased about 300% in the last 3 months. $200 is about right. You can find some kits for less on e-bay, but scammers have been coming out all over because of the high prices, so buyer beware.

I got lucky.

I asked about graphics, because you bought a CPU without an iGPU, that I would personally avoid. Now, i5-12600KF costs almost $200, about the same as i5-12400.
