I mostly meant having to take accountability and having to buy a new device because somehow, you touching their old ass hardware, was the tipping point for it to break. That coupled with "it used to work and now it does not. You're the last one who touched it (months ago), so it's your fault".

Friends and families are great at pushing blame onto you because they feel entitled to something or another, since you're their "friend" or "family". Fck 'em.

Ok family contacted CNN apparently this isnt news......

Friend brought there laptop round to re paiste the cpu and gpu nothing we havent done before..........

Step 1 open case.

Step 3 start unplugging things fans........... Wait what was step 2? Oh yes unplug battery. BUGGER......

Need a new laptop.

I can kinda laugh about it now but FFS.........

Well Im living on bean on toast for six months and sleeping in the dog house as we have to help replace it now.

Why? Are you a professional repair guy? No, and your friend knew that. So he took the risk and handed his laptop to you, apparently w/o switching it off. That's not on you, it's his problem :old-eyeroll:

As it is, it may even have been a case of your "friend" setting you up to fail so his new laptop was not on his expense 💸🤬

Ayy my man that's the lesson we all learn at some point.

Just so you understand how things like this might happen. My friend tried to disassemble her laptop to re-paste it, and due to funky design decisions by Asus she had to disconnect the screen cable to remove the cooling. Like in your case, she did not unplug the battery. She popped it off, it slipped off her fingers and touched the components on the mobo with a metal part of the connector, making a small but "you know you messed up" kind of spark. Display IC dead, luckily got fixed in the repair shop.

Always unplug your batts kids. Anyway, you sure the laptop is done? What happened to it exactly?

Not seeing anything that would make me think the laptop was dead.

You can unplug cables while things are on without killing them.   It's not an instant death sentence.

I'd take it to a real repair shop.

While I do agree and wonder why he wrote that in the first place,

It does remind me of the few times I blew my Iphone while trying to fix something in it.

Yeah done this mistake multiple times. Sometimes all I had to do was wait a day or so and boom laptops back.

Had this happen with my own lenovo legion where after opening the ram shield simply fell out (improper install from factory I think) and zapped the system for a bit before I knocked it off with a plastic spudger.

Its still goin fine 3 years on.

How did you end up sending 12V to the chipset...

Well, nice that you're taking accountability.

Things like this is why I don't do tech support for anyone anymore.

Sounds like you shorted something which made a buck converter blow. They're super efficient at stepping down voltage but their failure modes tend to take out everything downstream from them.

Quick note: are you sure the laptop was working before you opened it up?

I don't know how chummy that friend is, but it is a possibility that he handed you a broken laptop to get you to replace it for him.

Also, when I repair things, I do it for free, but I take no responsability if the repair fails. If they want it done by a pro, they should pay a pro.
