Context: I work in Automation background where we have created custom solutions to using readymade hardware.

I have see multiple custom requirements from the client side, we have use custom hardware using ESP to ready made hardware. But a simple search in AliExpress will surprise you, you can some times find custom ready to deploy hardware that seems legit.
The new house Linus bought is a content goldmine. form

  1. Renovation to spec.
  2. Tasteful Automation.
  3. Low budget Automation.
  4. Ultimate Smart home.
  5. AliExpress Automation.( compare to other to see where it fits Like low budget vs aliexpress).
  6. Minimalist smart home (no touch or tablets just tactile switch that looks like any other normal switch and alexa for voice control)  very popular in houses with elderly.

I have done projects low as 250 USD  (about 22k INR) to 8900 USD (about 800000 INR).

I would love to know all of your thoughts..

I like the idea of a smart home, but i don't like the idea of always online bullshit and corporations harvesting my data or studying my behaviors, any smart products i buy have to function offline or i won't purchase them (I life off-grid, i have access to internet for important things, but i don't want to waste it on my LG fridge-freezer sending info about my habits back to head office).
