Google's Project Tango - One beast of a tablet

post-216-0-26667500-1402004538.jpg

Google just announced a new development kit for "Project Tango".

The kit is a 7" tablet with some really nice specs:

Nvidia Tegra K1 processor. That's a 2.3GHz quad core Cortex A15 r3 (same CPU architecture as the Tegra 4 but with some minor tweaks and higher clocks) chip with one additional core and 192 Kepler Cuda cores.

4GB of RAM

128GB of storage

4MP rear facing camera with 2µm pixels. Sounds familiar? It's the same resolution and pixel size as the HTC M7 and M8.

120 degree front facing camera (really wide angel but no word on the resolution yet).

Front facing speakers.

The usual stuff like WiFi, Bluetooth and LTE are of course there as well.

It also runs Android 4.4

On the back we also find a "Motion Tracking camera" as well as an "Integrated Depth Sensor".

The last two are probably there in order to do some of the 3D things

(which is the actual "project Tango").

What this will enable Google, and other developers to do, is map 3D environments.

If you have watched the WAN show you've probably heard Linus talk about augmented reality, like laser tag with some portable Oculus Rift.

This could be used to map the world. It could also be used by Google to map buildings indoors for Google Earth, among other things.

There are still lots of unknown specs (like the screen, which I suspect is 1920x1200 like the Nexus 7) and for 1024 dollars the price is anything but a good deal.

You can sign up to be notified about a developer kit on this webpage. You have to be a developer by the way.

Tango is cool

but it serves are very specific function (mapping of 3d spaces)

If your grave doesn't say "rest in peace" on it You are automatically drafted into the skeleton war.

Very cool idea. For those wondering about the high price, it's cause this isn't meant to be a "regular" tablet in the sense that it's not meant to be used for online streaming or touchscreen android games.

It's a Developer Kit for motion and depth sensing work, which if you ask me would work nicely with self driving cars :P

I'm not saying it's gonna be used exclusively for that, but top of my head it can be used to represent your sorroundings virtually and other funky self-flying drones technologies.
