So I have a bit of an odd question, but is it alright to use a PC if the motherboard is facing downwards and all of the expansion slots and GPU are inverted, i.e, pointing downwards.

I am asking as I have external expansion cards that I have running over a PCI-e riser to an external case that is holding the said expansion cards. (picture for reference) photo_2025-07-23_11-40-02.jpg.e3cf470d9d58cb8b7f6bf12c8a006799.jpg

Right now this PC is on the floor next to my TV, but I have a dog and worry that she will snag one of the cables and cause some damage so I was going to put up and out of the way on a rack. However, to keep the expansion cards connected I would need to place the PC so the PCI-e slots are faced downwards. I know the typical way to orient PC's is either horizontal or vertical and as long as anything mounted to the PCI-e is screwed in correctly it is fine. But does this hold true if the weight of the PCI-e card is faced downwards?

Downward as in the pcie slot (or the motherboard) will be facing the table / surface you put the pc case on ?

If so, I'd say should be fine as long you screw the GPU back bracket and there's still PCIE slot lock.

If it's a chonker of a GPU, i'd probably add a support between the surface & the gpu.

case laying flat is the best for gpus and mb slots but up or down dose not matter.

you can also buy 90degree and 180 degree pcie expatiation cables

i think the cooling is worse if the gpu is up top vs the bottom for air flow unless the gpu fan is blocked by a card.

other then at its looks

the btx was kinda for most mbs had ram slots rotated for faster air flow... but it never really cough on except in euro

I have dyslexia plz be kind to me. dont like my post dont read it or respond thx

also i edit post alot because you no why...

  • 2 weeks later...

Cards were originally meant to be mounted with the components upward. ISA slots allowed this positioning. Then later they added PCI slots but they were placed alongside ISA so you could choose which slot to use for a case opening. This meant the cards had to flip upside down. So really you're mounting your components right side up.
