Hi all!

This is a bit of a follow up to my prior post. I am currently running a Ryzen 5 5600X with an RX 9070 XT mainly for gaming at 1440p and am not planning on upgrading to AM5 as I feel as though the few percentage increase in performance I would get would not be worth the nearly $1000 AU I would be paying to upgrade the platform + CPU. So, in case I feel the bottleneck is a bit much, I was thinking of upgrading my CPU but staying on AM4.

It would most likely be between the R7 5700X3D or the R9 5900X. While I will mainly be gaming, I do quite a bit of productivity work, specifically engineering related, including but not limited to PCB/CAD modelling on Fusion, SolidWorks, simulations on Ansys, etc. They are roughly the same price at times but usually the R9 5900X is AUD50-100 more expensive/

Do people believe that it would be worth upgrading the CPU at all with the upgrade to the RX 9070 XT? And if so which CPU?

First things first, have you looked at performance usage patterns to see if you're CPU bottlenecked at all? In something like Civ, sure you're probably gonna be CPU bottlenecked, but if all you play is games like Doom Eternal you're probably not going to notice a CPU uplift.

If this was purely for gaming, the 5900X wouldn't really be an upgrade as it's the same core architecture and only mildly higher clocked. If you are indeed having a CPU bottleneck in games a 5700X3D would be the only real upgrade.

Where things get complicated though is the fact that you also do productivity work, and realistically we can't answer this question for you. We don't know what the usage breakdown is, how much your current setup is struggling in these, how big and strenuous the projects you're working on are, etc., all the things that would indicate what the system would need more of. All of this comes down to you need to ask yourself if you need an upgrade in the first place, and if so whether you want it for games or for work.

a 5700x3d or even a 5800x3d would be the way to go if your dead set on sticking with am4 in terms of gaming at least on am4 the X3D cpu is the gaming king also make sure you have high speed ram as ryzen like 1:1 ratio for my 3900X 3600mhz was the sweet spot

5700X3D or 5800X3D
