Download a benchmarking program like aida64 (as an example) (for testing multiple components like CPU/MEM)

Test his existing hardware, show the scores and then compare them to newer parts scores.

 

Telling certain people things has no value, you MUST show them.

The last 6 computers that I have built have been $4-600 "family computers", and they all replaced $1.5k+ "family computers".
Stuff cost more 7 years ago, AND, when comparing a "Badass gaming computer" from a custom PC shop 7 years ago, of course it would be 4k+. And of course a $600 system 7 years later will kill it easily, it's the way tech works. It's pretty awesome actually, it's just that we live with people who dont understand any of it.....

 

Believe me, after working for years at a PC repair shop, you hear some crazy prices and opinions on stuff.....
