Its been almost five years since i bought my first computer and i was thinking to upgrade to a smaller form factor build, currently i have

-i3 10100f air cooled

-b460 atx motherboard

-gtx 1650

-400w de-530 atx psu

i got a few spare cash at the moment but didn't have enough to buy entire computer so im thinking of upgrading one by one and ran into a dilemma

I could buy an m-itx board now and use my existing cpu and case but looking at the price i thought it was going to be a waste not just upgrade to 12th gen with basic b660 atx motherboard, or i could go with a case that fit atx motherboard but it just not the same as using smaller form factor case like the ch160 or the nr200

The other choice i just look into is using matx motherboard because its not as expensive as mitx board and use something like a ch260 or something similar

Whats the best option should i choose, or should i save my money to go mitx on newer platform?

Don't invest anything in your current platform, and upgrading to 12th gen is not really the best neither

Really AM5 is the only good option atm

Yeah, that would be a waste.

Save your money until you have enough to get what you want.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

You shouldn't upgrade to 12th gen, or even Intel, now.

Consider AMD with AM5 instead.

I still want a 10850k... The only Intel CPU except Pentium 1 that I like 😅 there's just something mythical about it... I bet it's still good too, even AMD FX is still holding up!

I don't really see why you want to upgrade the CPU? Looks to me the only sensible option would be a complete platform refresh (including that GPU).
