im planing on getting a hdd to move my games that i dont play often to and just move them back to my fast main drive when im in the mood to play the game again instead of downloading my games again every time i want to play them. but does this even make sense to do taking in to account the speed of the hdd compaired to my internet speed? (i have a 1Gb connection) and if it do make sense do you have any reccomendations on a good hdd?

a harddrive will still mostly outrun your internet connection speed even a slow one. also your connection speed has no relation to the speed that steam feels like throttling you at any given point

thats true but i have never seen steam download with under 800Mbs but im just not sure what the speeds of a hdd is

Pretty much topping off at ~150mb/s. HDDs typically can't even saturate a SATA 2 bus.

800 Mbps is equivalent to 100 MB/s. The HDD should be capable of up to 150 MB/s, provided the file isn't fragmented, resulting in a sequential read. Of course your Steam download is typically compressed, so while it may be slower, it'll also likely need to transfer less data (at the cost of higher CPU load for decompression).

No, waste. I did that when I had 30Mbps even 300 is quite the improvement, let alone 1Gbps and now I have 2Gbps speed. While downloading I'm almost saturating CPU unpacking the game, same for my NVMe SSD too.

If you had slow net I used to sure, maybe if you really frequently do swap games then at least to another SSD otherwise it makes no sense really.
