FX8350 running hot

Go to solution Solved by -rascal-,

Alright so I reapplied and reseated my Evo 212, now I'm getting 56 while in battlefield 3 and about 36 idle. If I get a Thermaltake Frio, would there be any improvement? I'd like my CPU to be at 50C on load

I would not suggest that you get a Thermaltake Frio now. It was good when I bought it...back in 2010 / 2011...but since then, new CPU coolers are able to easily out-perform it.

Heck, I grabbed a Swiftech H220Water-Cooling kit to replace my Thermaltake Frio (but...two died on me within the 30 days of my initial purchase. Pump failure).

Remember, each CPU is never 110% the same. You may or may not be able to get 50*C during load.

If you are out looking for a new, better performing CPU cooler, have a look at some of these.

*Note 1: Keep note of the size of the coolers. They may be too big for your motherboard and/or computer case. Make sure before buying.

**Note 2: Some of these cooler can be quite expensive.

  • BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
  • BeQuiet! Dark Rock 3
  • Nocuta NH-D14
  • Noctua NH-D15
  • Noctua NH-U14S
  • Noctua NH-U12S
  • Xigmatek Dark Knight II

If you want anything better, you'll need to look into water-cooling

***Note 3: Check compatibility of radiator mounting before purchasing. They may or may not be standard 2x 120mm / 140mm mountings.

****Note 4: for an example, the Neputne 280L uses a unique mounting for 120mm fans, and a newer 15mm spacing for 140mm fans.

  • Cooler Master Neptune 280L
  • NZXT Kraken X60
  • Cooler Master Glacer 240L (improved, lesser to no problem, twin brother of the swiftech H220)
  • Corsair Hydro H105
  • Corsair Hydro H100i
  • Corsair Hydro H80i

I'm new here and I'm posting this as a last resort after my searches have come up empty. So I have the following build

CPU: FX 8350 - Stock clock

CPU Cooler: Evo 212 + MX-4 Thermal paste + additional Sickleflow for pull fan (Stock push fan)

Mobo: Asus m5a99fx Pro R2.0

GPU: Asus GTX 770 DirectCU II

Power supply: Corsair CX750M

Case: Enermax Ostrog

As the title says my CPU is running hot. Right now at idle I'm sitting at 40C, I played BF3 for about 10 min and my CPU had reached 60C which is a little high considering my research tells me that the CPU will throttle at 65 and fail? at 70.

What's even more strange is that before I applied the MX-4 I was using the stock thermal paste and I was running at no higher than 56C (Using same fan set up).

Currently the case I'm using is kind of tight for my set up, I have 2x120mm intake fans (1 side + 1 front) and 1x120mm out (Rear), can't fit any fans up top due to spacing issues.

Essentially I'm asking what can I do to fix my temperature issue, I understand this isn't the cooling section of the forums but I wasn't sure which to post in since I'd be considering any alternative as long as it gets the temperatures down. I'm planning on getting a new case (Suggestions would be appreciated)

Also it's important to note the room the PC is running in is usually around 25-30C ambient. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am for sure going to change my case but as far as CPU cooling goes I preferably would like to stay with the Evo 212, so if there are better fans I can use for it I have no problem buying them but if the price of the fans gets too high I might have to go for the h100i.

Well usually these cpus tend to run hot anyway, but when is the last time that you cleaned out your fans. It could also be your heat sink, maybe it isn't working or the thermal paste is messed up. Unfortunately there is a lot of different reasons why it could be so hot and it would be hard to figure out exactly why.

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

Throttling point is 70C (or 80C, some sources conflict). 70C is max temperature for temporary test loads. 62C is max 24/7 operational load temperature.

VRM may also throttle if those get too hot.

IIRC 80C or is extreme throttling or thermal protection shut off, or 90C might be shut off point. I can't remember.

You're running too hot. Check if your motherboard is on automatic voltage and turn that off since it's probably dumping volts IF your heat sink isn't installed correctly, or if you used to little or too much paste.

They run relatively cool, actually.

As far as dust/blockage goes, I build the PC last week so that's not an issue, I will both readjust the seatting of the cooler and reapply thermal paste. I'm looking at a Haf 922 case or NZXT H630, any comments on them? Also what about the fan setup on the Evo 212, I'd like to run it as cool as possibly without breaking the bank.

Running 70C is fine for benchmarking and myself and @bamerx98 have tested it that they throttle at 80C and we have different boards.

You can shut off the thermal protection if you want to go above 80C but not something that is recommended because even a small voltage bump sends temps through the roof at that point.

AMD has never released thermal specifications for it. It's widely regarded to be held to similar thermal durability has Phenom chips in the 8 core variants.

Failure and temperature accuracy begins to become a problem once you veer passed the 60's though.

@Justdefied I had the same problem with that board, but I was @ 4.8Ghz on my 8350.

I ended up ghetto mounting a fan from the stock cpu cooler on the back of the mobo, over the socket, dropped the temp by 7-8 degrees.

AMD Chips should run on par or cooler than an Intel chip. The physical size of the CPU is A LOT bigger than an Intel chip, so they should be under heavier temperature limits.

Yes I used Arcticlean 2 step solution with coffee filters + waited couple minutes to dry. As far as applying thermal paste goes, I used uncooked rice dot in the middle, got no excess paste coming out from the sides of the CPU. It's possible evo 212 is seated wrong since I installed it without removing my mobo.

Post a screenshot of the temp software that you are using, i had some throttling problems with my FX 8350 but it turned out that it was the VRM section of the mobo that was getting hot, a little fan on it (over the VRM heatsink) solved the problem.

It is a slim 80mm fan from an elite 130 from coolermaster.

Also i have a Corsair H110 on my cpu, it is overkill to cool de CPU itself but it does it while being really quiet.

I hope this helps.

PC has been sitting basically on top of AC outlet at idle and this is the lowest temperature I could manage with unrealistic scenario:

http://i.imgur.com/krtAdSr.png

If your room temperture is 25*C - 30*C, 36*C or so seems about right. Remember, ambient temperature plays a pretty big role in temperatures as well.

If it's a hot summer day, and you're getting 38*C / 40*C room temperature, the CPU is going to be.... ~45*C / 48*C / 50*C. It aint going to be the same as the room temperature or lower - unless you use Dry Ice / Phase changing cooler, or some demon sh!t black magic.

With a room temperature of 19*C - 22*C, my FX-8350 idles at desktop at about 34*C / 36*C. Of course, mine is clocked at a constant 4.8GHz, and it has a big @ss Thermaltake Frio CPU cooler with two CoolerMaster JetFlo fans on it (and using Antec Formula 7 nano-diamond paste).

Thanks. I just ordered a Noctua NH-D15, From the reviews I found it performs as well as the H100i (Unfortunately my case doesn't have enough space for the h100i rad unless I ghetto rig it to the outside of the case which I'm not interested in doing. The noctua NH-D15 is compatible with my mobo (Checked Noctua site) and pcpatpicker says it's compatible with my case as well so I should be good to go.
