What kind of power draw are people out there seeing on their 5080s when they overclock them? Im building a new rig with open loop cooling and plan on overclocking cause I always do and I find chasing the numbers fun. I am using a 9800x3d so I am trying to figure out if a 1000w supply should be sufficient or if I need to bump up to 1200w.

The 5080's peak power draw at stock is 360W

Ya I just know people have been pushing them pretty far beyond that with OC, with that said though if they are 360 I cant see a world where they are drawing over the 500ish range so if I have 1000w quality I should have no issues id imagine

Oh I think you misunderstood or I wasnt clear. I am in the process of building right now. Waiting on the card like most people, have the loop parts in route, have the mb and cpu landing this week and still need to get a PSU, RAM and storage. So I am just trying to decide on a PSU right now, dont want to underspec but also dont need to go way over board either

MSI - MAG A1250GL PCIE 5, 80 GOLD Fully Modular Gaming PSU, 12V-2×6 Cable, ATX 3.1 & PCIE 5.1 Ready, 1250W Power Supply, 10 Year Warranty - Newegg.com

I use this at 4k gaming and have been monitoring the cables and its working great.   I don't recommend using the 12v splitter cables that will come with your card.  this psu was made because people were melting their cables

No, you don't need to. The 9800X-3D only draws about 120 watts, 160 max overclocked. The highest the 5080 generally gets is 400 watts, even overclocked. It is incredibly efficient at overclocking. It seems apparent that Nvidia held back the performance on purpose so they can release a Super Refresh next year.

Anyways - 150W CPU, 400W GPU, add in another 100W for the rest of the system (MoBo, RAM, Fans, ECT) and your total system draw is about 660 watts max. I would be incredibly surprised if you could even hit 700 watts with this system. So honestly, an 850W Gold or Platinum would drive this system without issue.

Trust me, I know, I have an 850W Platinum PSU driving my Radeon RX 7900-XTX and 7800X-3D system and Ive never even come close to maxing out my PSU (I think my max was about 620W with max OC on all components), despite the fact that I have a 400+ Watt OC for my 7900-XTX that has been run on a daily basis since I built the PC in Summer 2023 (See Signature for details). My CPU is less power hungry than yours, but my GPU can easily be OC-ed to 430 watts.

My typical gaming power draw is about 500 watts if the GPU gets 100% load. This is pretty perfect because the peak of pretty much every PSU's power efficiency curve is at about 60% load so I am getting pretty much the best power efficiency possible when gaming.

So ya, your 1000W PSU is more than enough, you could run a 5090 with that PSU As long as you didn't pair it with a power hungry Intel i7 or i9 13th/14th gen that can draw over 250 watts. Anyways, this is what 5080 OC looks like, power consumption included:

thanks for the link, theres surprisingly few options on google search atm, and searching on sites mixes in psus with 8pin connectors.
