Several things I've actually been wondering about LTT forums and forums in general, an about page. How long have the forums operated? What can you expect to find? Who works here? A list of LTT staff present in the forums would also be nice.

One more thing, what is your current methodology on purging inactive accounts? Another forum I look at frequently just reported to have purged several accounts that never posted anything. There's some social media sites that should probably do that. Of course if you've never purged accounts before, then I have to ask, of the nearly 1 million accounts on LTT forums, how many of them do you think belong to people who are no longer alive?

You can ask questions like this. Some info is already present or very easy to discover with basic searching skills (actually good to learn/practice as fellow members appreciate it going forward).

For example staff page is available from main menu directly https://linustechtips.com/staff/

Both list of LMG Staff and info about age of the forums can be found from members list (accessible through search https://linustechtips.com/search/) https://linustechtips.com/search/?&type=core_members&joinedDate=any&group[4]=1&group[21]=1&group[28]=1&group[33]=1&group[24]=1&group[34]=1&group[30]=1

The "what can you expect to find" is odd question. But I guess logical if you are Gen Z or younger. Though it should get very self-explanatory from looking at front page and reading Community Standards.

Current policy is none. But if any 0 or low post count account has username you would like, contact staff. There are lots of spammers in that number. Tens of them are banned daily. Of real people, not longer being alive is not valid reason for account being removed.

But, other than exceptional circumstances we generally won't free up usernames from other accounts.

I think you should consider pinning this thread once it has run its course of questions and answers. Or do something to make use of this thread. There's already some great info here that might not be obvious to people not immersed in LTT Forum culture.

For example? The first part is something you can find out just by looking around. Which is what one should always do on new platform. Second, as shown by Mortis, is something we are keeping unclear on purpose.

There are guides on basic functionality. They just aren't updated. Personally I value learning by doing more than learning by reading and asking questions. I find it frankly baffling that anyone thinks looking around on new platform is making things difficult or bullying someone new.

Only things that require bit more are LMG staff list which, imo obviously, is not easily accessible. The accounts that matter are those which post and engage on forums overall. Second is age of forums which can be found out from couple places. Of which easiest is thread in Forum Information subforum called "10 Years of LTT Forum"

Imo it shouldn't be too much to ask anyone joining of doing 4 things before posting.

  1. Read front page. What kind of subjects are posted and on where.
  2. Read Community Standards (2nd link on top bar on desktop view and 2nd on mobile view menu)
  3. Search before first post. This teaches how search works. The tab for searching members is also visible.
  4. Check what is in account options.

Some functionality is such which would need to be taught. Mainly how tagging, embeds and multiquote works. But those are generally noted as soon as someone makes their first post anyway. Fact is that making a page doesn't equal people actually reading it.

There did used to be an FAQ, but it fell out of date and received minimal views/engagement, so it wasn't serving much purpose. The problem with FAQs is that they need to be frequently asked questions, and very few questions do get asked - I suspect the questions that you asked are not ones that most people need to know for example.

Thanks thats helpful

I think not being alive is a pretty valid reason for not posting!
