To be fair, just about any setup can't run DayZ at max settings. It's a horribly optimized game. I have a 780ti and I can't max out settings at 1080p, forget about 1440p. Battlefield on the other hand...

when u say 1440 does that reference the monitor or the resolution of the game itself

monitor resolution. you need the monitor to be at the resolution that you want to be able to play games at that resolution eg 1440p will only work on a 1440p monitor

no, it is possible to run a game at a higher resolution than the monitor. It is called downsampling. Downsampling give a similar effect to AA which is useful in games that dont have an AA option

If he wants ultra I'd go for the 6GB version, maybe 2 (if you want to run the game at 4K with ULTRA settings)  but even I only managed 50-60fps at 4K and ultra settings and that was 2 titan-blacks, but got around 120fps when went to a lower resolution hated that the detail changed with it even though I kept the settings at ultra, that's my biggest gripe with this game the engine just does not know how to downscale textures... 

 

There will be a high resolution texture mod eventually that will solve the problem of paying a arm and a leg for gpus to just enjoy the game the way it was intended which is in sli and 4k"and that's not cheap... well the monitors are now but not the gpus"
