Good day,

Thanks for taking the time reading this.
So I would like to upgrade my network set up. Learning as I go. But I am not sure if what I am doing is correct.
So I currently have the  USW-Enterprise-8-PoE (120W) and I want to buy the Ubiquiti UniFi Switch Aggregation. In the computer room, the NAS and my Computer are running CAT 6, and when we move so will my wife's pc will also have cat 6. Now since we are renting I am not sure if we can upgrade the appartment from cat 5e to cat 6. Lets just say we cant not a biggie. I will keep the computer room CAT 6.

So here is my question
I am going to put the Intel Ethernet Converged X710-DA2 Network Adapter (X710DA2) in the Synology nas, and move the one currently in there to the pfsense box. And have my pc, the wife's pc, and the server(docker pc) and the pfsense box use adaptors (XZSNET 10GBASE-T SFP+ Transceiver, SFP+ to RJ45, 10G Copper SFP+ to Ethernet Module Compatible with Cisco SFP-10G-T-S, Ubiquiti UniFi UF-RJ45-10G, Mikrotik, Meraki, Netgear, D-Link and More, 2 PackXZSNET 10GBASE-T SFP+) and have the NAS connect to the USW-Enterprise-8-PoE (120W) via a 

10Gtek# SFP+ DAC Twinax Cable, Passive, Compatible with Ubiquiti UniFi ES-48/ES-16-XG, 1 Meter(3.3ft)10Gtek# SFP+ DAC Twinax Cable, Passive, Compatible with Ubiquiti UniFi ES-48/ES-16-XG, 1 Meter(3.3ft).

I plan on (regardless if I can change to cat6 or not) buying some Flex Mini 2.5G for the rest of the house. For the moment only the unifi U7-Pro needs it. 


Hope that makes sense. 

Is this a good idea, and are there any issues I should look out for etc.

You typically need an aggregation switch to act as a main upstream switch and handle multiple downstream switches. This is common for companies. But an aggregation switch can also be used as a simple switch for personal needs. I believe the aggregation switches from Ubiquiti use SFP+ for 10Gbps. The adapters or conversion transceivers require a lot of power and generate a ton of heat, so they are not advised in the USW-Aggregation. You could get away with one or two, but I think four devices using transceivers is going to wear out the power supply in the aggregation switch. Ubiquiti has the USW-Flex-X which is a 10 Gbps switch using RJ45 ports. You could use a single transceiver in your 8 port POE switch to connect to the Flex-X, effectively giving you 4 more RJ45 ports for 10 Gbps. 

 

How complicated is your Synology NAS anyway? Do you have enough drives in there with a compatible RAID configuration to saturate a 10 Gbps line?

 

I think it would be helpful to understand why you're trying to add the aggregation switch. It looks like a well priced 10 Gbps switch, and it is, but not for RJ45.

I did think about that. But the flex only has 4 ports, it wont alow me to grow, and it seemed like a wast if I need to add another pc. I was thinking about going with another brand. but I have gotten used to unifi.. and from what I hear, I can not manage everything if I have different branded switches.  

I was also thinking of moving over to fiber. But I have no clue where to start. to be honest, it is a little scary.  especially the part that if I dont calibrate it right, it will break, cause of how strong the laser is.

I have the 1821+, it is fully poppulated and has 2 m.2 for cache and 32gb of ram.

I mean you can control additional devices... you would just have to go through a direct connection using IP addresses and without Unifi's management software. Are all these devices in the same room? If so, you could purchase SFP+ network cards for your PCs and use direct cables from an aggregation switch to the PCs if they warrant a 10 Gbps connection. Just throwing out some ideas. Moving to 10 Gbps for the whole network is not a cheap project.

You seem to know more about this stuff than I do, so take this comment as you want.

You are not the first one in my social bubble considering fiber. I would just leave it for now. You can get 10G using copper and with the distances within a house the benefits are extremely small.

Do you have any recomendations, for me to start out with if I do go for the SFP+ setup?

The only thing is the only unifi switch I can get that is 10 gbe only has 4 ports.. and that is not enought.  The next bst one is $1299 if i remember correctly. 
I really want to upgrade once. and not worry for atlease 5+ years
