Anytime I startup my laptop and try to do anything on it, something like Windows Defender antivirus service or some other malware removal tool is sucking up ram and disk usage, no matter what I do. Does anyone have a permanent solution, cause I'm trying to do a quick google search but I gotta wait for 20 mins for my browser to launch.

Buy more RAM. Make sure to buy a matching kit that is compatible with your laptop.

System specs?

Unless your laptop is ancient, has 1 gig of RAM, or is running off a mechanical hard drive, you shouldn't notice if Defender is running.

Ok, my laptop is ancient but without the "Microsoft Antivirus" running it works really smoothly since I installed an SSD and got some more RAM

500 MB of RAM out of 12 GB isn't unusual for for Windows security.

Umm, So, usage of a total of 5gb is normal with 3 chrome tabs open??

Sorry, I've been using this old machine for a really long time and am not aware of the current standards.

I understand the frustration. But just venting and choosing a thread title like you did isn't productive.

There are free alternatives to Windows. No one is forcing you to use Windows.

If you provide proper complete specs, people may be able to advise better. Do you at least use a good SSD or is it still HDD-ancient? Maybe I missed it, but what Windows exactly do you have? Has this always been so bad, or is that a recent development?

12 GB isn't great, but if browsing is all you do, it is sufficient. I suspect it isn't dual-channel. and if it is, it isn't working well due to asymmetry (i.e. 8Gb and 4GB stick).

And RAM usage is a bad way to judge an OS. The more RAM you have, the more Windows will use. Because RAM is faster than HDD/SSD. It is a good thing to use as much RAM as possible instead of storing on the SSD. You don't get money back if you don't use the RAM you paid for. 5GB is not much.

I would suggest doing a web search for info on things that are safe to take off of Windows startup. You wanted a permanent solution and that would be adding more RAM.

Oh please. Not this poor. You know, even on a top-of-the-line system, you will see a slow down because of Defender. Say, you are trying to shutdown, and Defender is doing some stuff and it requires some time. But yes, overall on a good modern system, there shouldn't be too much of a slowdown.

OP has a laptop, which makes it much worse. Now OP didn't fully list their specs, but even on a like a 4-5 year old laptop (guys, that is still 2020, Intel 10th gen era; don't be fooled!), with lightweight specs, a modest Gen 3 NVMe SSD, or much worse, a SATA SSD, there is a significant slow down. Believe me. And having Windows 11 installed makes it much worse.

But it probably is not just because of Defender. OP should make sure that their Windows install is at least nice and healthy.

let it finish a scan?

endlessly trying to interrupt the work it's trying to do makes the problem worse, as you've no doubt experienced here.

I've tried this, but if you leave the windows on idle it just keeps running different tasks using up resources.

You're right about the 8gb, 4gb, config, Also I do have a SSD now. Actually I'm looking for a hack to stop these Antivirus programs, cause I need to use windows for some tasks.

So my POTATO PC specs are:

Core i7-3630QM

Nvidia GT 630M

12 GB (8 + 4) DDR3

256 GB SSD (Its about 170 GB full out of 222GB, wonder if that affects its performance?????)

Its like 10 years old.

It works great, but sometimes, like this happens once everyday, it just freezes up for like 30 mins

You might want to run disk cleanup. That will clear up some unneeded files.

is this, by any chance, an upgraded system from windows 7 that never got a clean install?

might as well give the usual "dumb fix" a go:

- disk clenaup

- run the following in cmd as admin:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
