Posted September 29, 2024 With all the issues I've heard about 13th Gen intel, are they a good buy now after the patches or would AMD be better? I usually lean more towards intel, but only because generally at the time of buy they are the better option. Or wait for 14th gen? xD P.S I'm just interested in the poll results xD Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/1583997-amd-or-intel-right-now/ Share on other sites
 For new PCs , I still would not recommend Intel, until we can be confident that its been rectified. This recommendation will change at the end of this year. Arrow lake comes out end of October, and that may change what is the better buy. Zen5x3d comes out around then as well. With all the new agesa/windows/microcode changes, look again then to see how the rapid changes over the last quarter have shaken out as all those changes had effects on a lot. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you’ve had your head in the sand for a bit recently. The overwhelming sentiment currently is AMD 7th gen as it seems to have the most stability with greatest performance. There are plenty of tasks that intel is more performant and is stable at, we just dont know with confidence the current degradation status. It is probably fixed, we just cant say that with confidence. Posted September 29, 2024 well.. the intel 13/14th gen issues appear to be essentially limited to the most high end SKU's, so if you werent getting some i7 something kf.. the intel stability problem is irrelevant. and beyond that.. it depends? you've given no usecase, no budget, nothing. if one was always, factually, provably better than the other, the other wouldnt be on the shelf. When you don't work in the industry anymore, and spend your time on other things when do you do research on CPU's? When you are looking to buy a new one. Posted September 29, 2024 5 hours ago, Katze said: Or wait for 14th gen? xD You mean 15th gen. The issues affect both 13th gen and 14th gen CPUs. Intel only recently announced a microcode update (0x12B) that, as they claim, should address the root cause of the issue once it rolls out. We don't know for certain whether it does or if there are still other, undetected, issues. It will take months of testing to verify that new CPUs no longer degrade. Which means it's not yet guaranteed that 15th gen is unaffected (though Intel says it is). https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/09/intel-releases-one-last-microcode-update-to-fix-high-end-desktop-cpu-crashes/ Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/1583997-amd-or-intel-right-now/#findComment-16533258 Share on other sites
 Posted September 29, 2024 If it has to be literally right now, like buying today, then I'd likely go with something AM5. In a month we should know about Arrow Lake performance and it may be something to consider. I'm debating replacing a 2nd system which is more work focused, and Zen 5 looks great for that. But since I'm in no hurry I will give Arrow Lake consideration. Posted September 30, 2024 The best response was given by @manikyath. You've given us nothing related to your computing needs upon which to base our responses, so we can only speculate. Most people tend to prefer one brand over the other, so you're just getting popularity results, not useful info. I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give. My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong. Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/1583997-amd-or-intel-right-now/#findComment-16534074 Share on other sites
