intel-Core-i7-5960x-Core-i7-5930k-Core-i

Do you think this is to be believed? I was hoping that the 5930K would be an 8 core chip, just with a slightly smaller cache, over the X (extreme) unit (as per their previous lines).

IMHO, this would be disappointing if it's only a 6 core chip. Thoughts?

It would be a little disappointing, but I'm not entirely sure at this point. I've been out of the loop for a little, and find that the jump from 4960X to 5960X is nice.

You're looking at quite a jump in max link speed and overall support, especially since it's ushering in a new 'era' so to speak.

I wouldn't purchase it, but it's definitely a conversation piece - and the entire line (from what this states) is nothing to sneeze at.

LGA 2011 is natively 40 lanes. as you can see in the diagram. Anything more is due to a extra on board PLX chip.

hmmm a 5960x, Oc it too 5ghz and call it a day till Skylake-E...sounds like a plan.

I totally agree. I was hoping for a 5960K (or 5930k) 8 core, slightly underclocked chip.

Never saw the point paying $999 for a X brand chip with slightly more cache.

Slightly disappointed with intel here. Never the less, I'll just save more coin because I'm a big believer in the 8-core enthusiast/productivity market.

AND ps. since when does 2011 chipset only support 2 x 16 + 1 x 8?

I thought there were current 2011 WS boards on the market that do 4 x 16 ?

X79/2011 only has a max of 40 lanes from the CPU (16/16/8).  Boards can have the CPU wired to PCIe switches instead of directly to the slots, and then using the switches they can wire up multiple slots from a single set of lanes, but the switches themselves will still only have 40 lanes worth of bandwidth back to the CPU.  In essence, a 4x16 slot board can't support all 4 slots transferring at x16 max bandwidth.  The benefit is that it lets you have x16 bandwidth in any slot you choose (or any two slots, in the case of X79), but not all 4 of them at once.  So you have more flexibility in where you place your cards depending on what hardware you are using.

I guess people have a legit reason to get an extreme edition CPU now.

Was a little surprised that the 5930k didn't move up to an 8 core as well.

Yeah, i´ll be honest i have no use for this CPU at all but you know what? i want it anyway! 100% pure Bragging rights!

Well now i am considering to get the 5820k.

It'll be an expensive upgrade. And I'm guessing these won't be released anytime soon.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the "GT/s" unit on the PCIe speed specification?

It stands for GigaTransfers per second, it's the PCI Express bitrate.  8GT/s is another way of saying PCIe Gen3.  8GT/s = 8Gbps = 1GBps which is the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 per lane.  Actual data throughput will be a little less due to encoding overhead, which is why they use GT/s instead of Gb/s to avoid confusion about whether they are talking about the raw bitrate or the actual data throughput after overhead.

They need to add a PLX Chip to achieve this. F.E. the Asrock Extreme 11 has i believe 2 of the chips.

They should keep the i7-X820K as a quad core with a higher clock speed vs the i7 X770K on 1150 to give an entry level chip to the platform. The 5930K looks undercut by the 5820K.

Kinda dissapointed here, going to way for broadwell-e next year and just go with z97 for now "and when upgrade time comes it just a cpu/mobo change" so not a real expensive upgrade.

Also I never get the first gen of newer memory, I remember when ddr3 came out and didn't see much of a difference and now you do so hopefully within a year ddr4 kinks will be bugged out.

It is slightly disappointing but that is not going to stop me in getting the 5960X :D I want the 2 extra cores regardless
