Any opinions for the B550 motherboards below?

GIGABYTE B550 AORUS ELITE V2

MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK

ASUS TUF GAMING B550-PLUS

I think all three are overpriced, but other choices are from BIOSTAR, which in the past I was advised to avoid.

I've been using a b550 msi mortar which is basically the mATX version of the tomahawk. It's been fine for about 3 years. No issues.

What CPU and RAM are you using?

5600x and corsair lpx 3600. I went with this board because at the time, builzoid said that it was one of the better ones as far as VRMs went. Lots of headroom for beefier CPUs, though I have yet to upgrade and when I do, it will likely be a platform upgrade, not just CPU.

Which kit of lpx 3600? Do you have a reason to upgrade (assuming to AM5)?

Right now I am happy with my system. It's good enough for what I need. I *may* go to AM5 next year, or I may just keep this until am6 or whatever Intel has in 2026.

I can't find CM4X8GD3600C18K2D on their website. Is it only 8GB? Do you use 2x8GB?

what biostar boards are available?

if you dont intend to do any tuning then theres no point wasting your money on a "better" board

also are b450 available? especially used ones as these are usually pretty cheap and used is the main advantage of am4 for both mobos and cpus otherwise youd be better off with a 12600k on lga 1700 if you are buying new b550 and new ryzens (excl 5700x3d)

I would just get the Tomahawk, it's a good board and have excellent cooling for VRM. I got the Elite V2 (rev. 1.1) and its works fine as well. I learned yesterday that any other rev. than 1.1 for elite v2 has a feature that is similar to Asus Armoury crate. Essentially a backdoor.

Thanks for the information about Gigabyte. What I am thinking is that for about the same price, I can get a decent B650 motherboard, so I am still not sure if I should build a system on AM4 to save some money or on AM5.

You mean B650 ?

Well, if you're building from scratch/not upgrading, I strongly advise going AM5 indeed, the lowest chip (7600) has comparable performance to the best AM4 5800X3D

Yes, corrected, thanks. But with the new AMD CPUs and chipsets recently announced isn't better to wait again?

Not really, the new ones are not really better but more expensive, the 7000s are still the way to go for more than 6 months imo

The new chips are more efficient for their performance or can be ramped up to provide better performance than 7 series.

They aren't really much more efficient, they're just set at Eco mode stock, but then perform quite similarly to 7000 chip on eco mode as well

Generation gain is around 5% only, give or take

Otoh prices are 30% higher, so not a good deal atm

There's higher gains in some all cores load with PBO/OC but average should be around 5% and even less in gaming

Sure it's marginally better but prices are too high atm vs previous gen. Plus BIOS seems still buggy, and RAM instability isn't fixed

BIOS seems still buggy? Are you talking about existing of new chipsets?
