Hard drive not detected and making noise. Can I recover

Deftlizard

About a month ago my notebook was stepped on and the screen broke. I recently replaced the screen but when I turned it on it took almost an hour to boot windows. Now my notebooks hard drive is making a whirring and clicking sound and know that it the read head clicks but I can hear it from about a foot away and the notebook is not detecting it. I had ubuntu boot disc and it detects it but when I try to benchmark it gives me an error saying that the operation failed. What I really want to know is can the data be recovered. The drive looks fine on the outside but I don't know what the inside looks like. I am willing to take apart the drive if I have to. I should also mention that the warranty has expired.

Never take apart harddrives (never) you will always break them.

You could try some recovery tools like recuva, Photorec. HirensBootcd/ultimatebootcd also have some nice little tools in them.

I'd stop trying to use it (you risk causing more damage) and I'd bring it to a specialist, if you need the data in it. if you don't, get a new one, 320gb hdds would cost you much less than a specialist would.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

The issue with taking apart modern HDDs is that because the read/write

heads are very close to the platters, it only takes a very small

particle of dust to scratch the surface and/or damage the head, which

is why it's not really that great of an idea to take it apart (with older

disks, where you have more space between the heads and the platters,

this is less of an issue).

If you can't recover the data yourself with whatever tools you have,

you could take it to a specialist (and in that case, don't take it

apart first), but be aware that that can be very expensive (several

hundred USD and more, depending on how much work it is for them to

get your data). Whether or not your data is worth the money is for

you to decide.
