can you have a router and a moden and then have a router in another room with no modem conected to it?

If the router in the second room supports Access Point (AP) mode yes.

Do you imagine the second router gets it's connection from the first, and by wire or Wifi?

Bear in mind, this won't work as a mesh network with one WiFi name, by the way.

Correct. If you use access point you’ll have a WiFi name for each router. If you get a mesh system devices will be able to roam different routers using the same WiFi name.

If you run a wire to mesh system you get “full” speed everywhere. If you run that second router wireless, it will half your internet speed when connected to that router.
