Ryzen 5 5500 reaching 90 degrees C with stock cooler.

Heyo, was wondering if anyone knows why a 5500 would creep to 90 degrees Celcius during a Cinebench test?

System specs are as follows:
- Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core with an AMD Wraith cooler.
- ASUS PRIME B550M-A WiFi II Motherboard.
- ASUS Dual RTX 3050.
- 16 GB (2x8) DDR4 @ 3200 MHz.
- 4x 120mm fans.

It had a Ryzen 5 4500 before this and had no issues with it.

I have not changed anything in BIOS save for D.O.C.P. and ReBAR.

Did you re-use the thermal paste + cooler from the Ryzen 4500?

If you take the CPU cooler off, you want to re-apply the thermal paste.

Next step is to make sure the cooler is mounted properly.

The Ryzen 5500 should not be getting that hot, even with the stock cooler.

I used the new cooler that came with the box, which has paste pre-applied.

After I discovered the heat issue I took it off again and applied some Arctic MX-4 I had lying around that I used for my main build (which is a 5600, no heat issues, same cooling solution).

It could be a fault sensor or a fault app, get multiple different apps and make sure they all read the same temp.

I would double check the mounting.

When you reinstalled the CPU Cooler, did you tighten the 4x screws gradually (e.g. in a 'X' pattern) ?

Yes, I did so twice, screwed in each screw until I met considerable resistance in an X pattern.

One thing I want to add is that I didn't check the BIOS version, is what came out of the box and already worked with 5th gen, hence why I didn't think about maybe updating it (I'm not at this computer at the moment, would probably be like 10 hours before I can check).

Also, when it's first started up, it idles at around 58 - 60 degrees.

After about a minute or two it settles and idles at a more normal 45.

Might be normal behavior but I'm not too certain.

What does the CPU fan run at?  Both percentage and fan RPM.

What does it idle at within the BIOS/UEFI?

I'm not at this computer at the moment, but I can tell you it runs at around 42 in BIOS.

Use HWMonitor, if you have the Asus software it should tell you temps. CPU-Z also works (I have never used it though). if you have your own thermostat maybe try putting that to the side of the cooler heatsink and see what that reads. Note, I'm pretty sure this is safe, do your own research before doing it. @-rascal- do you know if this is safe?

CPU-Z does not read temperature sensors.

Probably not the issue in this specific case but HWMonitor is garbage and notoriously gives false readings. The industry standard for all system sensor monitoring is HWiNFO64.

I will try this 5500 in another system and see if these overheating symptoms come with it, trying to rule out anything wrong with the actual CPU itself.

Or perhaps wrong BIOS settings, not sure.

You won't get accurate temperature reading, it will basically give you the air temperature coming off the heatsink.

It's going to be A LOT lower than actual CPU temperature.

HWMonitor can give funky readings....I've personally switched to using HWiNFO for all my systems, including my Ryzen 5800X rig.

The motherboard should support Ryzen 5000 series out-of-the-box, but you can check for any new BIOS updates.

If you suspect a BIOS setting is wrong, possibly, use the 'Load Defaults' option.

My mistake about the motherboard, I forgot I upgraded that to a B550M-A WiFi II about 2 days ago.

This was originally an A520, and when I switched the motherboard (because WiFI, I did had the Ryzen 5 4500 in it first and then upgraded it to the 5500.

Throughout all this, it's been the same SSD boot drive. Hope that makes sense.

I'll update the post accordingly.

The fans spool up because they detect high temps and they try to get more air temp into the system. TBH this is a difficult situation. Contact Ryzen and your MOBO manufacturer and see what they say!
