Heyo LTT!

I need help, and just anybody, i need you! :D

So i have a P5B Premium socket 775 motherboard from asus (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5B_Premium/)

and i had an E6600 in there.

Then i just discovered i had an E6750 lying around here so i thought, what a great upgrade! (266mhz lel)

Easy schmeasy swapping the cpus and trying to boot into Win7 but it just keeps bsod'ing.

Other Hardware:

CX500m psu

8gb GeiL ram

hd 5870

some 320gb hdd

I tried:

Some different hdd modes

windows recovery thing (what do you expect, eh?)

removing battery

20000 reboots

Before the "upgrade" everything was super slow but fine ^^

The weird thing, the first boot went pretty good. Windows was like "yeah, there were some changes, i have to restart" and until then, only bsod.

Some help would be greatly appreciated and rewarded with a Cyber cookie! :)

maybe cpu is dead? (increase vcore first tough)

i dont think so. it worked perfectly 3 years ago :D

And it gets detected in the bios just fine.

how are the temps in the bios?

did you forgot thermal paste?

Cant see the temps for some reason. But i installed the cooler and everything correctly, 100% sure

Pour some Liquid Nitrogen on it, that always fixs old tech

ehm... :D

Are you sure it is the CPU, try putting the E6600 back in and see if everything is fine (if it is then you'll know what the issue is), also if you're saying that everything is super slow with a Core 2 Duo E6600 I can tell you know that an E6750 is going to be barely noticeable.

So i contacted ASUS and they told me to flash the bios to 1201 and then do a CMOS Reset. I did all that and i still BSOD like crazy.

Also, Temps in Bios are fine, CPU is at 30°C. It shows a FSB of 1066mhz which results in 2133mhz CPU frequency (i actually want 1333FSB and 2666mhz CPU)

Okay so can you POST?  Can you get to the login screen? Can you login to desktop before the BSOD?  Can you start windows in Safe Mode?  Or when you restart is the first thing a BSOD?

If you can get POST or login screen or even desktop before BSOD, windows should log a dump file in the system drive (if it has been enabled).  You should be able to re-install the e6600, download a BSOD dump file viewing program, and run it to find out what the crash relates to.  If it's the E6750 CPU then chances are its a dodgy CPU, or the pins have bent, or incompatibility.  You should also post the specs of the E6600 CPU because there are two different variants, not that that should make a difference but it might help isolate the issue.

nope, havent tried the 6600 again because i think (or i hope) it'll work fine with that one again. Also, what should the memory be saying? It worked fine before and it works fine now i think. Its 4x2gb but it says only 7gb are usable. not sure why but it was like that before.

I do Post, yeah.

It goes as following: Push power button, all the post etc screens, Windows logo starts to form with the 4 dots. 4dots freeze, BSOD, rebooting automatically.

Tried getting into safe mode but its only BSOD'ing too. So i have no chance getting into the windows environment at all right now.

Well it doesnt seem like the pins are broken since it actually displays stuff?!

I have the E6600 with 2.4ghz and i cant throttle the 6750 by myself cause i cant change any cpu settings really.

I think i'll just throw the 6600 back in there and see what it does.

I think you should try and boot a linux distribution from it's disc or from a pendrive and see if everything goes fine with that. If it does, then it might be something wrong with system 32 or a firmware update gone wrong (should get fixed with a reinstall). If it doesn't work, then I'm afraid the cpu is sowehow broken and even though it is recognized by the bios it could simply fail as soon as some load is placed on it.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

So yeah, the weirdness continues.

I tried booting into Ubuntu off my external ssd at first the boot failed, but the second try got me into Ubuntu. I then ran some tests to see if i can get the cpu too 100% load and i can, its perfectly stable. (well, didnt do long time tests cause for some reason it doesnt detect my wifi stick and i dont have any internet on it but yeah...)

It also shows the cpu at 2.66ghz just as it is supposed to be.

I dont really know why a update woould've gone wrong or why my system32 would be damaged cause i didnt do anything other than swapping the cpu. it worked like a charm before.

Can i btw get a new windows going without having to reinstall all the other programms on the pc? Cause i dont really want to set it up new completely lol.
