are 4790k temps suppossed to be like this?

aren332

I have a 4790k @1.325v @4.8ghz, asus z97-c motherboard, ddr3 ram @1.625v, cpu cache @1.225v @4.4ghz.

My 4790k is delidded with arctic mx-4 paste and uses an arctic liquid freezer ii 280 too cool it (also with mx-4 paste).

Running prime95 26.6 small ffts for 30min, temps max out at 90c avg at 85c. 140w power consumption. Is that too high or normal for my cooling setup?

Also, the cpu temps spike real quickly too, like during prime 95, it went up to 78c in less than a second, and then slowly climbed till 85c (liquid heating up), opening chrome for example, spikes the cpu up to 56c for a second

These cpu temp spikes also occured on my be quite dark rock pro 4

The thermal paste is spread evenly, no missing spots

I had 4770k that was running like a furnace and after delid I used liquid metal and had Dark Rock Pro 2 cooler. Could run it daily at 4.6GHz 1.4V and it was peaking to mid 80C during heavy AVX loads. I personally never bothered with Prime95 but I used Linpack Extreme instead.

It's probably normal for the overclocking you have done. 4.8ghz is quite high.

You overclock it and run Prime95, it's kind of what you can expect.

Reset to stock and see what your temps are.

You're running one of the most demanding torture tests for CPUs, so the results are fine and, unless you're doing equally demanding things on your PC, there's nothing to worry about.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
