i5-8600k and Hyper 212 evo, what should I do?

Budget (including currency): <$1,000

Country: United States of America

PCPARTPICKER LIST

I currently have an I5-8600k and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO that I got for free from a computer class (s/o to the instructor). I am not sure what I would use this build for, but here are some ideas I had:

  • Dedicated VR PC in either the basement or living room hooked up to a TV (Blade and Sorcery, Beat Saber, Blaston, KTANE).
  • Give the computer to a friend/family member as a gift
  • Back-up storage or NAS

The part list is linked above, I appreciate all feedback and suggestions for what to do with the build. This would be the 2nd PC build I have ever done.

Still a decent gaming PC for everything except the very latest, so it would be a shame to relegate it to a backup, or a display output.

True, I did choose a Z chipset motherboard since the cpu is a K series.

Have not purchased anything else yet so I am still planning.

I don't see the point of spending $600+ on new parts to fill out a build around some old parts you got for free.

Seeing what else you can find in the secondhand market, sure. But $200 for a 1070? I don't care if it's "refurbished," it isn't worth more than a hundred bucks at the very most based on performance.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

I want to make use of them and not have them collect dust. And if 200 for a 1070 is overpriced, would a $104 970 be acceptable?

These a 8600k is meh and also sturggles in new games due to being a pure 6 core no ht cpu so I'd skip on getting a build around it. For 1000$ you can easily do a full new build and avoid this mess

Lol no.

970 is a $50 card at best.
